Toxic Air Proving Fatal For Kids

For the fourth consecutive day, residents of Delhi and the NCR on Thursday woke up to a foggy morning with complaints of respiratory problems and watery eyes. As air monitoring agencies predicted a similar situation for some more days, health problems are likely to be aggravated. In fact, kids are bearing the brunt. According to experts, since children breathe faster than adults per unit of body weight, they end up inhaling a higher amount of contaminants.

In Beijing, as part of their four-tier pollution alarm system, this kind of severe air pollution on three consecutive days would result in a “red alert”, where schools and kindergartens are closed, power plants directed to cut emissions, car use regulated  according to number plates (restrictions similar to odd-even).

This is the result of our so called ''celebration''. Inspite of organizing innumerable awareness guides, every year we end up having the same situation. Every year we end up having the same or higher amount of pollutants in the air. We need to follow strict rules such as minimizing the use of personal transport and utilize public transport. Using mask will only do more good to us. Shutting down schools can be an option if the air pollution is severe.
