The 2017 Wishlist Of Top Sportspersons

The New Year brings new hope. As our sports stars wish and pray for good luck in their quest to achieve more success and stay fit, there is this temptation to gaze into the crystal ball. TOI asked some top sportspersons about their 2017 dreams...

DIPA KARMAKAR (GYMNASTICS)

"The year 2016 has been a memorable one for me. Although I was quite disappointed after missing out on an Olympic medal, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to make the Olympics cut and reach the final was in itself a dream come true."

"With the post-Rio felicitations over, I'm back to my rigorous regime. The New Year is arriving with new challenges and it's time to stay focused and keep performing well in international competitions. My immediate challenge is to win a medal in the Asian championships (in Kazakhstan, June 2017).

"I'll continue perfecting the Produnova vault. However, my sir (Bishweswar Nandi) is planning to introduce one or two new varieties in my game. I'll start working on them soon. Hopefully, the New Year will see me reinforce my game with more technique and skill.

"I may have missed the medal in Rio by a whisker, but my objective is to realise that dream in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020."

ADITI ASHOK (GOLF)

This will be my rookie season on the LPGA Tour and I have conditional status, so that should get me into a few tournaments next year. My goal is to play well in as many events that I can get into. But with my performance on the Ladies European Tour in 2016, I should be able to play and do well in a few Majors as well.
"In fact, that will be my main focus - to perform well at the Majors. I will still compete on the LET and play in as many events as I can because I enjoy playing in different parts of the world and playing on new courses."

PR SREEJESH (HOCKEY)
We are now ranked sixth in the FIH world rankings. As captain of the Indian team, my goal is to see my team finish in the top-four, at least, by the end of 2017. I want the team to be more consistent this year. The two major tournaments we have in 2017 are the FIH World Hockey League and Asia Cup. Good performances in both these tourneys should see us achieve our year-end goal.
Also, I want to see more youngsters coming into the core group in the senior squad this year. So the Indian team of 2017 should be a nice blend of youth and experience. Year 2016 was good for us and I hope 2017 is even better."

KIDAMBI SRIKANTH (BADMINTON)

"My wish for 2017 is to win the All-England and World Championships. Staying fit, healthy and in prime shape too is very, very important."

RAVICHANDRAN ASHWIN (CRICKET)
The year 2016 was fabulous for me. It will be difficult to replicate in my lifetime, but change and improvement have been constants in my life. I will strive even harder in 2017.
"In the larger context, however, 2016 saw some terrible moments for mankind. I hope the New Year brings all cheer and good news. Let us be compassionate towards one another. Here's wishing you all a safe and happy new year."

SAINA NEHWAL (BADMINTON)
Fitness is the most important aspect for me in 2017. I need to work a lot on my strength and fitness. I'm sure if I am fit enough and moving well on the court, the results will follow. The first tournament I will be looking forward to in 2017 is the Badminton Premier League. Then there is the Malaysia Open. There is very little time to prepare after the Macau Open, but I will try and do whatever I can. I will be looking forward to giving my best performances from March onwards next year."

MURALI VIJAY (CRICKET)
This year has been a bumpy one for me. I picked up an injury and missed a Test in the West Indies. However, my form has been good in 2016. At the moment, I am working hard on my fitness and that will continue to be my priority in the New Year too."

PV SINDHU (BADMINTON)
The last year was probably the most memorable one of my life. Winning the silver medal at the Rio Olympics was a dream come true. Now there are fresh challenges, new goals. One must keep looking forward. In 2017, my aim is to improve further and win the World Championships and All-England title."

ANIRBAN LAHIRI (GOLF)

In 2017, I would like to get my breakthrough win on the PGA Tour. Also, I hope to come up with a career-best performance in a Major. I want to be able to improve on my performance at Whistling Straits in 2015. Hopefully, there will be opportunities which will allow me to do that. Then there is the Presidents Cup. It's an important goal, I want to be on that team."

VINESH PHOGAT (WRESTLING)

I am still recovering from the injury I picked up during the Rio Olympics in 2016. I hope that I can make a comeback at the same or better level at which I left. I will consult my doctor and I hope to return to training around mid-January and then resume competing from February onwards. I will try to make 2017 a memorable year with my performances."

GAGANJEET BHULLAR (GOLF)

First and foremost, I would like to stay free of injury through most of 2017. That is the primary goal. If I can achieve that, I will be in a position to get my European Tour card back. I would also like to make to the web.com Tour Finals."

GAGAN NARANG (SHOOTING)

The New Year is expected to ring in several changes. My personal goal is to provide more contribution towards making Indian shooting thrive. I would like to help shooters and create shooting enthusiasts, so that the sport grows and there are more challengers for the Olympics in 2020. On the personal front, it will be all about learning, un-learning and re-learning. One has to sustain the process of evolution because the only permanent thing is change."

JITU RAI (SHOOTING)

I have high hopes from 2017. India will be hosting the ISSF World Cup in February. I would like to win medals in front of my home crowd. Also, the biggest wish will be fulfilled if the ISSF retains the 50m pistol event in the Olympics programme. I wish everyone a very happy new year."

KARUN NAIR (CRICKET)

In 2017, I want to play and do well for India in all the three formats of the game - Tests, ODIs and T20Is. Also, off the field, I want to buy my dream car. I also want to buy land and build my dream house. Let us hope all these wishes come true in the New Year."
