Single-Sex Vs Co-Ed School: Which Is Better?

“There are no advantages to single-sex schools, which may foster gender stereotyping in a world that’s getting more and more diverse”, a US psychology professor said recently. But, is it true?

Diane Halpern, former president of the American Psychological Association, said that there are no conclusive evidence to show that separating boys and girls improve their education.  Halpern cited all available research on single-sex education published in the last few years, comprising 1.6 million students from all ages in 21 different countries.

A case for co-ed schools
Like Harpen, many argue that diversity offered in Co-ed schools help enhance the social skills of students and prepare them for a world where both gender play vital roles.  Co-ed environments teach students to better understand opposite sex, help in ironing out misconceptions and in the process break down gender stereotypes.

"I can openly talk to my guy friends and I value their friendship, said a  student. While another explained that “The purpose of education is not just to score good marks but it’s also to understand people around you.” Co-ed enthusiasts point out that both girls and boys have different strengths and traits. They both can get inspired and learn from each other. “School is preparation for adult life,” said a teacher. “How can we expect boys and girls to interact professionally, later in life, if they have no communication at school level? We don’t have gender-segregated workplaces so why gender-segregated schools?”

Does separating boys and girls improve their education? Let’s know in the comments below.

A case for single-sex schools
Supporters of the single-sex model say that, girls learning needs are different from boys and vice versa.

“There will always be exceptions but on the whole, in a mixed classroom, boys tend to dominate discussions, frequently putting themselves forward as leaders in group activities. Girls, meanwhile, are inclined to hold back. So, it’s really only in single-sex environments that girls can take centre stage,” said Helen Fraser, chief executive of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools in an interview to The Telegraph.

Others say that segregation/groupings is nothing new. In fact, all schools group pupils by age or ability. If this is done keeping in mind the learning needs of students, surely there is no harm in organising along the gender lines too?

The fear that students from single-sex school would later face difficulty in socialising with members of opposite gender is totally baseless. “Studying in single-sex school doesn’t mean that there is an embargo in meeting people from opposite gender. We can freely interact with them outside of school and in our family circles. So, there is no breakdown in communication,” pointed out a student for a single-sex school.

If we go by the research, there is no conclusive evidence to establish which is better—single sex or co-ed.  But we have ample research to suggest that whether single-sex or co-ed, the quality of a school is linked to the style of teaching, the breadth of the curriculum and providing conducive environment to pollinate young minds.

No it is not like that the education should be in single-sex or Co-Ed School. It is parent wish. As you said the quality of school is linked to the style of teaching children must be taught how to think, but not what to think.

Children will develop confidence and will be aware about the etiquette they have to keep in mind when they are dealing with the opposite sex if children are from a co educational institution . Where as in single sex schools they will be completely unaware about this. Other than this in the matter of education I don''t think there will be any difference. Education completely depend up on teacher and the children who are studying .

School being the nourishment place for a life of a student play''s a vital role in shaping one''s character. School teaches us equality but by studying in singles sex school their up bringing curbs to gender inequality . They feel supirior from other.

Undoubtedly co-education is the better form of education as a child gets an opportunity to deal with the other gender and gradually learns the etiquettes to interact with the other sex which are essential in today''s society.

I would always prefer a co-ed school even though I am a girl.Even if one is going to study in a single-sex school, after our education ,the job has to be done in a world consisting of both males and females. So I feel its better to get used in our childhood itself to live with the people of the other sex as well.

no, i don''t think so.

Separating boys and girls is not a good idea. Being I girl, I understand that girls usually bring in unnecessary drama into small situations. At such times, other girls turn against us, leaving us with no one to talk to. At such times, a boy is who I can easily approach. They help us get rid of all drama by explaining how stupid those stuff are, and help us feel much better. I have very well experienced this too.

Co-Ed schools are definitely better as it makes us aware of the basic nature of the opposite gender or the "counterpart". Also, it makes us deal with opposite gender right from a tender age and inculcates a sense of accomodation.

Co ed schools should be preferred because they are a symbol of equality. It proves that a girl and a boy are equal in each and every sense. It also helps to enhance people''s their mentality. And make them realize that a girl and a boy can be friends too.

There are a number of advantages of a co-ed school, in this type of education both the boys and girls get exposure to higher studies where they have to learn team work. in single sex teaching the child doesn''t develop the qualities to coordinate with a group full of boys and girls and only gets restricted to the things that he can do with his own sex.

No, definitely separating boys and girls will not improve the quality of education. In such case the students will not learn and adapt the qualities to deal with the opposite sex and will only be confined to their own limitations. I think bringing co-ed education will contribute to the better quality of education and a competitive spirit among children.

We say, men and women are equal. But if we don''t start it in schools, then how would you expect that these children will grow up with a mentality of gender equality? Gender is not a problem to accomplish any task today.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

I am strongly in favor of Co-Ed schools. Both the sexes form an integral part of our country. How can we expect them to interact professionally later on in life if we''re not allowing them to interact even at the school-level? A school should focus on the overall development of a child which includes interaction with classmates (whether with girls or boys) too. They get an opportunity to interact with the other gender and should learn the etiquettes of how to behave in the society.

From my point of view, Co-ed schools are more advantageous. It shapes a student''s personality and character as an individual without any gender differences. As told above, it facilitates one to involve herself or himself in mixed groups not only at the workplace, but also in various realms. Whereas the individuals educated in single-sex schools, aren''t comfortable working with people of the opposite gender which prevents them from improving themselves and they also lack judgemental ability.

Ananya NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

it is much better to study in Co-Ed School because it will be the very first experience in dealing matters as we live in a world consisting both boys and girls. none of them should be discriminated. Actually , single-sex school makes a difference girls and boys.

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

Children should study in co- educational schools. Boys and girls should not be taught in a different way. Co- educational schools enable children to increase their tolerance. Children become adjusted to the opposite gender and may increase discipline among children. Single-sex schools do not enable children to develop such qualities which may be handy in future.

I would always prefer co-ed schools . It was said above that boys tend to dominate discussions. Only a co-ed school can take out this difference. Some girls who are really desirous .. try to break their shell and come out only in co - ed system . Studying in a single - sex school is just temporary. Once they come out of schools , the environment seems to be different one.

AMRITHAVALLI.S Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Education is preparation for life ... Our life is always In mixed groups. Schools should show the real life . Single sex schools show only one part of life. The become unaware of other part of life ..

Sanjana Mehta G.D. GOENAKA PASCHIM VIHAR

The genders have nothing to do with academic speed or excellence, some girls are intelligent and some are not, and same with the boys. The basic aim of education is to prepare us for the life ahead, and to develop our personality. Dealing with the opposite gender from school level itself helps the child to naturally develop an appropriate etiquette to deal with the other sex. This helps shape the personality of the child, increases confidence and enhances personality.

akshaya.s JAYA MATRIC HR. SEC. SCHOOL

of course! co ed school is best because there will be better communication to understand the opposite gender. even my cousin studied in single sex school, now she is working in IT but she feels uncomfortable to communicate with the opposite gender. so friends, always prefer co ed schools.

Jeevika Eraiyoli NEW HORIZON THANE

Education can take place without any discrimination in a single-sex school. A child can always interact with the other gender outside the school. Single-sex schools also help to build higher self-esteem.
