Shun Soda Politics, Say Youth Reporters

Ever wondered why a product with just water, lot of sugar and some chemicals is so popular? Is it the case of misplaced advertising,  use of words to attract or wrong celebrity endorsements?

The industry whose only interest is making billions irrespective of the health hazards it would have on the consumers, have kids as their main target.

Experts On Soda Politics

“Its all about the right words that are being used to sell not just a drink, but a lifestyle. Very little has been written about how we as a society are changing our food culture. The way in which the corporates deliberately used language to say that home cooked food is not good. How convincingly the food giants brought in the whole idea of processed FOOD goes to show that we are gullible.

Sunita Narain, Director General of the Centre for Science and Environment

Processed food have altogether created a fashion, an aspiration, a glamor. Some companies have successfully created a glamour element to this sugar-water products. One bottle of cola is equivalent to a day's quota of sugar.

Rujuta Dwivekar,  celebrity nutrionist

There is a deliberate wrongful use of icons or celebrities to promote these products which are falling in the category of empty calories or junk. This needs to be addressed as in India,  celebrities drive a lot of audience towards themselves.

Sourish Bhattacharya, food critic

There Is A Book That Analyzes Soda Politics

A book on the soda industries named Soda Politics-Taking On Big Soda (and Winning) by Marion Nestle, analyses and summarises this issue. The book highlights the use of languages used by soda companies to make the product aspirational for the consumers.

The Solution?

The solution, as suggested by the conversations, was the use of alternatives like taking  honey in place of sugar, or juice instead of flavoured sugar.

Youth Reporters Say There Should Be A Concerted Campaign To Deal With This

The problem is not with wrongful advertisements.  It is about low awareness.  People,  especially kids are not aware that the soda is extremely harmful for them. It's not just fattening but has health complications too.  The solution is to start from the roots.  Let us all campaign  against cola in our schools,  colleges,  societies and communities.

Swastik Patnaik,  class X,  Mother's International School,  New Delhi

First of all the government should ban such advertisements or at least these companies should be forced to carry a danger sign  like tobacco companies have.  Then,  an alternative to this soda has to be researched.  Why can't we have an indigenous product that is healthy but tasty too?

Ashka Dhaliawala, class XII,  Amity International School

If there is a way to deal with such menace is to make the public aware of what they are consuming.  If kids don't know that sugar and soda has health consequences they won't understand the matter completely.  We should begin with drives in the school to educate kids and their parents about the nuisance these big MNCs are pushing down our throats.

Many types of harmful soda have harmful health hazards, the government should impose ban on inappropriate types of advertisements related to this. The people also need to ensure that the flavored drink they are drinking is not suitable for them and can affect their health. These provisions should be taken or due to large consumption of these aerated drinks one day will come when we are addicted to them and can''t leave them even if we want to.

Amish Agarwal Goldcrest High Vashi

Aerated beverages are really hazardous for our health. It can adversely affect us. It is reducing the calcium content from our bones and also leads to other metabolic imbalances.
