Raj, Srikanth Kidambi & Other Game Changers

These game changers have worked hard to reach the top, making India proud. In the process they teach us one thing — in life there are no shortcuts!

Mithali Raj

‘Don’t Compare Us With Male Cricketers’

Who? Mithali Dorai Raj is captain of the Indian Women’s cricket team in Tests and ODI. She is the second highest run scorer in women’s international cricket and only the second woman cricketer to surpass the 5,500-run mark. She was born on  December 3, 1982, in a Tamil family in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Mithali started playing cricket at the age of 10. At17, she was picked for the Indian team.

Her passion: Mithali says reading a book calms her down, and even though she could not carry her Kindle on the ongoing tour, she borrowed a book from the fielding coach.

Her achievement: In the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 opening tie,  Mithali created two world records — she smacked a 73-ball 71, studded with 8 boundaries and created the record of scoring seven consecutive half-centuries in women’s ODIs. Mithali  achieved the feat in 178 games

I believe...  Women cricketers should hold their own – they must not be compared to their male counterparts. Men’s cricket sets the bar. All of us follow men’s cricket because we want women’s cricket to be there at some point. I have been very vocal about equal rights to players in the game of cricket. We want to be popular too, but first comes our game. We want to win each and every match.

Srikanth Kidambi

‘Let’s not discriminate in the name of sports’

Who: Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi was born in Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh, on February 7, 1993. He grew up in a humble household. His father is a farmer and his mother a homemaker.

His achievement: He beat World No. 1 Son Wan Ho twice in two weeks in the Australian Open Super Series (2017). And then he beat the reigning Olympics champion Chen Long to clinch the Australian Open Super Series in style.

His passion: Watching cricket. Especially, when his favourite player Virat Kohli is on a roll!

I believe... No sport should be sidelined; every sportsperson toils hard to make his country proud.

Anish Bhanwala

‘Having faith is important’

Who: Anish Bhanwala , a 15-year-old pistol shooter  from Haryana.

His achievement: Anish Bhanwala won the gold in the men’s 25m Standard Pistol as India clinched two medals on the opening day of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship (Rifle/Pistol) on June 25, 2017. Earlier this year, Anish had also claimed a gold and a bronze medal in an international meet in Pilzen, Czech Republic.

His passion: Bhanwala likes to solve maths problems when he is not watching sports channels at home. He can also play hockey and football.

I believe... Nothing is truly impossible if you fight for it.

Manushi Chhillar

‘Winning is not everything, but do keep trying’

Who: Manushi, born to doctor parents, studied at St Thomas School in Delhi and Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Sonepat.

Her achievement: She was crowned as the fbb Colors Femina Miss India 2017, on June 25, 2017.

Her passion: Reading and making friends.

I believe... The only thing I believe is certain in life is uncertainty and this is what makes living worthwhile.
