Potter, Feluda, Tintin Step Into ICSE Schools

KOLKATA: English literature classes in ICSE schools will no more be the same. The Council of School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has prescribed some of the most popular books of our times -Harry Potter included -for junior and middle-school students while laying down a uniform syllabus for all schools to follow from the 2017-18 session.
Most interestingly, it has introduced graphic novels -from Amar Chitra Katha to Tintin and Asterix to American cartoonist Art Spiegelman's Holocaust saga 'Maus' -for all Classes from III to VIII. This is a sea change from the time when students in ICSE schools would have their 'comic books' confiscated by teachers.

Besides Harry Potter's magic
The students will also get to enjoy the exploits of Feluda, Poirot and Holmes or set off on a life-altering adventure through Middle-earth with Bilbo Baggins in Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. For those who want a dash of humour, there will be P G Wodehouse and lovers of classics will have their Dickens. There will also be a host of autobiographies — from Anne Frank's to Malala's To APJ Abdul Kalam's. Not to be left out, the little ones in Classes I and II will get their fill of Noddy with lots of illustration.

"This is great news. I am a big fan of Tintin and Asterix as well as Harry Potter. Now, I would love to study them in class. The classes will become super exciting,"
Uttiya Gupta, Class-VI, Adamas International School

"We welcome this move as children will immensely enjoy reading these during their classes. Not everything will be serious reading."
Nabarun De, principal, Central Model School, Baranagar

Other changes in the syllabus
The CISCE, which was eager to have all its schools teach the same text up to class VIII, introduced its uniform syllabus for 2017-18 in Lucknow on Wednesday. If some schools fail to introduce the recommended texts in the coming academic session, they would be granted a year's extension, CISCE chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon said on Wednesday. Besides prescribing the texts, the proposed curriculum stipulates that nursery students must spend 800 instructional hours per year in school. Similarly, students from Classes I to V must receive 900 hours of instruction every year in school and those in classes VI to VIII, 1000 hours of instruction respectively. The council already has syllabus books for Class IX to XII. Till now, many ICSE schools followed the NCERT syllabus for classes I to VIII while some others preferred a syllabus framed by the Inter State Board of Anglo Indian Education. "The council received complaints that some schools were over-burdening their students in the absence of a definite curriculum," said a senior school official.

Yes, definitely it''s a good move. With this reading habit can be developed in children. I am sure that the children will prefer to read these books during their fee periods rather than disturbing the class. This move will help to bring discipline in schools.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

This is a great idea. We all love reading these story books rather than some borign stories in the text books. It will interest children and everyone will look forward to classes because of this.

MANAS KUMAR BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Indeed! a good step taken, this will develop and ignite a keen interest in students for reading and thus inculcating a good habit. Now students will form a wider understanding and knowledge while doing their study apart from the regular text book studies. This move is surely going to change the picture.

Vishakha Bhalla BOSCO SR.SEC.SCHOOL( PASCHIM VIHAR)

This is a very effective move, as children being a great fan of Tintin, Asterix like comic novels will love this change made by CISCE. This can ensure good increase in reading and adaptive habits of children. Autobiographies of some famous personalities will also be warm-heartedly welcomed by the students

Ishika Jain BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

This is a very good move. Students will enjoy studying and learning about their favourite characters. Students will read more books and it will help them in long run. Reading autobiographies or biographies will increase the interest of studying in students. I would like Harry Potter to be a part of our syllabus.

Sanjay.M Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

This is a better way to impart knowledge in students of these days. This method will be a success.

V.Ananya D.A.V. Public School

The Percy Jackson series could be included in the syllabus . Most of our generation people find classics boring and tend to develop an opinion that reading books is lame . But if we include contemporary books in syllabus , such as this , it will get everybody interested .

V.Ananya D.A.V. Public School

I feel that all types of curriculums like CBSE , State Boards , must also get introduced with these new books in their syllabus .

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

Yes, as the quote says, books are one''s best friends, story books which are liked a lot and have also fascinated all the kids should be introduced. It will make classes even fun. Children will also become even creative and more imaginative. More than the teachers teaching the kids, the kids should be encouraged to read these books and write book reviews on them as projects or assignments.

APARNA.V Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

Yes ,it is a good movie.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

Books are a treasure for a student. I want "the Harry Potter series" to be a part of my syllabus. I am voracious reader of the "Harry Potter series and I hope that many like me will enjoy reading it.

Manishraj Khan Delhi Public School Megacity, Kolkata

It''s definitely a good move. It will be a brilliant idea and will change the way students feel about "English Literature". The subject of Literature does not only refer to the study of pieces which are written at least 50 years back. Masterpieces like Harry Potter and Feluda do deserve a place in there. It will not only make the subject wat more interesting to the subject but also will stand as a leap to modernisation of education.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

I would like Narnia to be incorporated into the ICSE syllabus, as it holds a lot of values and is very interesting and gripping. But, I think if Narnia is introduced, all of its books must somehow be covered. Leaving it in half is injustice to the students as they''ll be missing out on so many back stories and so much of adventure.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

That''s really a great move and would help build up a student''s interest in academics.

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

Famous Five should be part of syllabus,it would be so much fun and interesting.Yes,it is good move as it would make sure that it won''t be a burden .

Spriha Dutta The Central Modern School,Barasat

No,it''s not a good move.English Literature should have remained in its place and so could have the priceless creations of Feluda,Harry Potter and so on.English Literature implies knowing about the great writers and poets of the Renaissance, old English.Including such fictional characters in the curriculum is totally a massacre as students will unable to delve deep into ''TRUE LITERATURE''..

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

The best way to attract readers.

Tanya Singh BHAWAN VIDYALAYA CHD-SEC-27

"Change is the only constant." Certainly, this change will reap fruitful endeavors. Inclusion of such books would encourage reading habits among students. I would like to read Michel de Montaigne, Dryden, Whitehead, Heidegger, Kierkegaard and others as I have already read some of their works, and I find so much beauty in their works that is readily reflected.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Yes, obviously it''s really a very good move..

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

it is a great move as students can read what they love as well as prepare for their exams.

Snegha.L Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Wow its an amazing idea...This will really attract students. Harry Potter series and Mr.Bean series could be included .

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Nice decision

Noor Kumar CARMEL CONVENT SCH SEC 9 CHD

This is an excellent move because not only does it inculcate the habit of reading in the students since the very beginning, but also results in a fantastic blend of classic and modern with the range of novels being introduced. I hope the board considers writers like Khaled Hosseini and Murakami for the senior classes as well.

Aadrit Banerjee Apeejay School Salt Lake

I would like Shradindu Bandyopadhay''s Byomkesh Bakshi to be a part of my curriculum for the fictional detective is my favourite character. This is really a good move....this will help Increase the interest of this generation in reading books.

Prakash.B Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yep this will be useful...I hope..

Yogaalakshmi THE LEXICON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL-WAGHOLI

It''s a really good move by ICSE.I hope CBSE and all state bords also introduce this type of syllabus.I am sure textbooks will become really interesting due to this move
