Paralympics Is Here. Do You Even Know?

Yes, India has been participating in Paralympic Games since 1968 held in Tel Aviv.  This year, India will be competiting with 17 athletes in five sports. 


India's para-athletes left for the Rio 2016 Paralympics which threw open its doors to the world's best Para athletes. The para athletes representing India were seen in high spirits ahead of the Paralympics. A total of around 4,350 athletes from more than 160 countries are travelling to Rio to take part in the Paralympics.


Indian athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Paralympic Games since 1968 (except 1976 & 1980 edition).


Medals
India has won 2 golds, 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals, taking the tally to 8. 


India's gold winner
Murlikant Petkar won an individual gold medal in the 1972 Paralympics, in Heidelberg, Germany. He set a world record in the 50m freestyle swimming event, at 37.33 seconds. 


When does the Olympics start?
The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will be held from 7 to 18 September. The Games will start with the opening ceremony at the Maracana stadium on Wednesday 7 September. The opening ceremony will include the live creation of a work of art by ceremony director and renowned Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. Brazil will be the first South American city to hold the Paralympic Games, having won the bid in 2009. The Paralympic torch relay will begin on the 1 September, visiting five cities – Brasilia, Belem, Natal, Joinville and Sao Paulo across the country's five regions. The closing ceremony will take place on Sunday 18 September.

What are Paralympics? 
The Paralympic Games are a biennial event for elite athletes with any disability. They follow the Olympic Games every two years, with both summer and winter Games.  The Paralympics are not to be confused with the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics are a year-round programme that emphasises the benefits of training along with competition at the local, area, state and International levels.
