More Indians Now Heading For US After School

The waning interest among Indians in an American university education is evident from the fact that the highest increase in enrolments, 18.8%, was from non-degree or vocational courses; in other categories, a 12.3% increase came from optional practical training (OPT) and practical work experience after degree courses for up to 36 months. But this increase is on a relatively small base.

The US now has 24,813 Indians at the undergraduate level, 90,333 in graduate programmes, 84,630 in OPT, and 2,238 in non-degree courses. Decrease in admissions in business management was offset by a newfound fancy for maths and statistics, which leads to jobs in data analysis and artificial intelligence.

The number of student visas to Indians fell more than 40% from 74,831 in 2015 to 42,694 in 2018, said the US state department. Even globally, the number of US student visas decreased by close to 40% between 2015 and 2018.

Total number of international students in the US, 10.9 lakh, is a 0.05% increase over last year, according to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. International students make up 5.5% of the total US higher education population.

“Overall, enrolment numbers, of which new enrolments are a subset, show a mixed picture,” said Mirka Martel, head of research, evaluation, and learning at the Institute of International Education. “Decreases in overall enrolments are primarily due to decreases in fresh enrolments in the past three years. As new students become sophomores, juniors and eventually seniors and as larger classes graduate, enrolment numbers will be affected by a lower number of students cycling through the system.”

India and China make up 52% of overseas students in US, with China at the No.1 spot. Of a total revenue of $44.7 billion (a 5.5% rise over last year) from fees of international students, China contributes $14.9 billion and India $8.1billion.
