Meet The 10-yr-old Multilingual Singer

Tiara Abraham is just 10, but she has already recorded her first album in not one, but six different languages. In an interview to Times NIE, Tiara narrates her musical journey, names her favourites from the music industry, and shares some tips for budding singers...

Q. How long have you been learning music?
I joined a children’s choir when I was 6, and was the youngest in the group. It’s quite difficult to find someone to teach a young child, but I was lucky enough to find a teacher to hone my skills in western classical singing.

Q. When was your first recording? What song did you record?
My first recording in the studio was held three weeks before we released the audio. My first song was Franz Schubert's ‘Ave Maria’ – a Latin classical song which I learned about two years ago.

Q. Tell us a bit about your latest album.
‘Winter Nightingale’ has nine songs. I have sung them in nine different languages – Spanish, Italian, French, German, Latin, and of course, English. The songs are in different genres – classical (Western), folk, traditional, broadway. People who hear me at events often ask for a CD, so we finally decided to make one. I wanted to make a Christmas holiday album.

Q. How did you come up with the idea of singing in six languages?
I wanted to give my album a universal appeal. Being a western classical singer, most songs are written in these languages and I love to sing in all of them.

Q. Are you proficient in all the six languages?
Yes, I have finished nine college semesters in Spanish, Italian and French. I learned to sing in Latin and German easily. I pick up the pronunciations quite fast.

Q. in which language did you like singing the most and why?
Though I loved singing in all  languages, Italian was the one I enjoyed a bit more.

Q. Which is your favourite genre of music?
I prefer Western classical but I like songs from other genres too. I like Adele’s ‘Skyfall’, Josh Groban’s ‘You Raise Me Up’ and Bruno Mars’ ‘Up Town Funk’. I also love Bollywood music.

Q. Who is your idol?
I would love to be a famous singer like Adele or Celine Dion but I do not have any idol. I look up to my mom because she gave up her dreams for my brother and me, and encouraged us to pursue our  dreams and aspirations.

Q. Do you listen to Indian  music? Any favourites?
Yes, I watch Bollywood movies too. John Abraham and Salman Khan are good actors. My favourite Bollywood numbers are ‘Baadal’’(Yuva), ‘Zoobi Doobi’ (3 Idiots), ‘Kamli’ (Dhoom 3). I hope to work with AR Rahman on some Western classical and Bollywood fusion numbers.

Q. Any tips for budding singers?
  • ãBased on the style of singing, learn correct techniques such as breath control, posture, pitch, from a good voice teacher.
  • Do not sing for long periods.
  •  Avoid shouting/yelling to save your vocal cords.
  • It is good to have at least 15 to 20 minutes of voice warm-ups.
  • Practise, even if it is for 15 to 30 minutes a day. I try to sing for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.

Q. Tell us about your family.
I live with my parents and older brother, Tanishq. They are all special to me. My parents support and encourage my talent. My father is a software engineer and my mother, a veterinary doctor. They have never put pressure on me or my brother to follow their profession. They have always told us to “do best in whatever we like’’. I have two pet cats and they are an integral part of my singing practice. They like when I sing high-note opera songs or play the piano. I enjoy their company a lot even when I am engrossed in my practice.

Q. How do you balance your studies and music? Any tips for beginners?
It is difficult to balance studies and music if you go to a regular school. Since I am home schooled, I do my work whenever I get the opportunity to finish it. The most important thing is motivation. If motivated, you can  balance your education and hobbies. But I must say singing is not a hobby for me – it is my passion and my profession.
