Let's Debate: Will Robots Eat Our Jobs?

According to World Bank research, automation imperils 69% of jobs in India. Scaremongering or early warning? By 2025, 70% of the country’s population would be of working age. Would advances in robotics, materials, artificial intelligence, ubiquitous high-speed networks, driverless vehicles and solar energy have completely transformed the economic landscape and rendered jobs scarce? Scary though the eventuality is, it cannot be dismissed outright.

Planners lack the wisdom to divine the future and plan for it. What can be done is to prepare India’s biggest strength, its human capital, to become creative and productive in unforeseen circumstances and to create the requisite social and physical infrastructure. Investment in social infrastructure — education, health, skills — must go hand in hand with investment in physical infrastructure. Past technological disruptions conclusively demonstrate that education is the key determinant and predictor of economic growth. Prioritising education requires an exponential increase in public spending on education but that alone is not enough. There is need for a radical change in the approach to learning, and the focus must be on outcomes. Critical thinking and challenging of received verities lay the ground for innovation. But a hierarchical society with highly skewed distribution of social power and wealth militate against a questioning attitude across society. Hyper-nationalism and majoritarianism have a similar effect.

Poverty, malnutrition and dysfunctional schools and public healthcare reinforce one another and the process of stunting minds and bodies. Stunted people are more likely to become victims of rapid social change than to ride it. The need is for inclusive and sustained growth.

Jobs that might be taken over by robots

Clerks
Companies look for ways to sell more products with fewer employees. ATM machines reduced the need for bank tellers, virtual assistants can answer the phone 24 hours a day, and selfservice machines are reducing the need for checkout clerks.

Factory workers
Robots come at a cheaper price and can work without taking breaks. A first robots-only factory is already being built in china.

Financial middle men
Blockchain, bitcoin’s computer program, can automatically process transactions and create a perfect, reliable digital record. recently, nasdaq said it will use blockchain to keep transaction records in its pre-ipo mark.

Lawyers
Non-litigation lawyers could soon be replaced by online form-based services like LegalZoom that can carry out simple tasks like trademark applications, wills and even divorce.

Pharmacists
The ucsf medical center in california recently launched a robotics-controlled pharmacy at two ucsf hospitals.

Astronauts
Nasa’s robonaut2 is equipped with a wide array of sensors and dexterous fivefingered hands and can help clean the space station and assist humans in space operations.

Waiters
An eatery which opened recently in Japan has a robot couple to wait on tables. Robot bartenders onboard Royal Caribbean’s ‘smart ship’ can shake a martini, cut limes & measure alcohol for pretty much any cocktail.

Will robots eat our jobs in the future?

Artificial intelligence is still in its infancy across the globe, when it does develop, it cannot be an overnight phenomenon. I think it is far to early to say that robots will cause unemployment. Employment opportunities are created by wealth creators -- which are mainly manufacturers to large scale service providers. This is a cycle and robotics are a small segment of this cycle. I do not think robots will take away our jobs in future.
Rajlakshmi R, class X, DAV Public School, Thane

Yes. The revolution is fast-approaching. These humanoid workers have already begun setting feet in our labour markets. The robots are far more specialized and sophisticated and can perform better at a variety of jobs. And definitely, the 'robot labour' is going to eat all our jobs. There shall soon come a time when these intelligent and clever workers will rule our economy. Humans shall no longer be productive and will live on the incomes generated by these all-singing, all-dancing creations.
Onkarpreet Kaur, class X, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula

Absolutely. Robots and robot assisted devices are driving cars, fetching our meals, cleaning our homes and even teaching kids. Moreover, you don't even know when you are talking to chat bots on Facebook messenger! I just hope we don't end up like the movies where robots take over humans as well.

Robots help us in doing the job but by these robo we should not be a lazy person.

Heti Desai SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR

Yes , I think that robots will eat our job as we are getting more lazy because of them and soon our all work would be done by robots only . A good example of such is a robot who works in hotel for serving instead of humans that serve in hotels even in factories and miles . Robots are good but as we all know that accesses of anything is bad same way too much depending on robots is just our loss .

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Yes , there is chances for Roberts to replace man in every field .

Mansi Borade PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

we should invent an good invention by this robot we should not cell it like this only we should use it in good work.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

I don''t think that robots will eat our job because we humans are the ones who create them. So we how to keep it in control.. And even if robots does all our works then our country in one way become a developed one. So its actually a good news for us.......

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

Yes, with the coming advancements in the technological era the robots may take our job as there won''t be any requirements of human employees because of the advanced robots.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

No, not necessarily! With the introduction of robots, the productivity will rise which will lead to higher incomes and living standards. Higher living standards imply rise in demand for enormous services both manual and technical.

We can not be sure about robots eating our jobs because even if they replace human in labour sector, there would be still need of engineers for programming them, developing new technologies, plus all .teacher, doctors, judges, lawyers, historians etc can not be replaced by them.

Yashaswini nand Army Public School

Yes, robots will eat r jobs in the future. This is an era of technology where inventions are taking place on daily bases. People are getting lazy day by day and hence we an alternative who would do all the work in place if humans. I guese, robots will the one.

Vihan R. Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

Let''s face it: there are millions of unemployed people in India. Also, big companies using drones to carry out their services and firing people is not going to solve the problem. It would make it worse. We must not let our people suffer and lose jobs because of robots. Workers must have job security. There is plenty of labour in our nation: so why use robos?

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Robot will soon replace us making us too lazy .

Nanthashree.S PRESIDENCY SCHOOLHMT LAYOUT

It''s highly probable that robots will takeover some jobs. I say some, for not all the jobs are what can be done in a mechanic way. For example, doctors and psychiatrists just cannot be replaced by an over smart, non living thing. Let'' face it- we are the ones creating them, hence why not do it in such a way that it will enable our country to grow rather than pulling away the jobs, what with unemployment alreading plaguing the nation!

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

The world is at its developing stage. Lots of development is going on. Robots are becoming a major trend nowadays. Due to this trend, robots will surely eat our jobs one day. This has both advantages and disadvantages. In one way, these robots may help humans accomplish difficult tasks. However, we humans should not become so lazy by making robots do all our work.

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

No because robots will increase efficiency of work and our standard of living will increase. And due to increase in standard of living there will be more demand of goods and eventually job opportunities will increase. Though the the sources of employment will change with modern times.

Dhruv Ranjan DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL (INDIRAPURAM)

Definitely , ROBOTS are the future and will replace humans in the industries and other fields in times ahead .Of course a large no of workers and people will be affected but when we get the work done perfectly thats all we need.Getting towards the cons we may become more dependent on these robos and human race might suffer.

Robots can take away jobs of human in future, but not now. We can use robots for difficult works like cleaning sewage. In America a small building has been build by using robots only.

possibly yes robots will eat up our job in future

SANYA KHURANA DAV PUBLIC SCH SEC-49 GUGAON

I THINK YES, BUT WE ALSO NEED SOMEONE TO OPERATE THESE MACHINES SO ITS NOT LIKE A THREAT. ITS NOT A THREAT UNTIL WE MAKE IT. WE SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON THESE MACHINES OR ROBOTS ALWAYS.

SHUBHAM BANSAL RYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

in this advanced technology, robots are the helpers of us. we are the creators. we shouldn''t be lazy. i prefer you all to read the book ''REIGNITED'' written by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Srijan Pal Singh. you will get the answer.

VIPUL MISHRA URSULINE CONVENT SCHOOL

Yess they will as the population increases, intelligence increases, new innovations & inventions will take over all our activities which human are performing nowadays but slowly and steadily it will be very difficult for humans but they themselves are responsible for their tragic end.
