Is It Ok To Ban The Burkini? You Tell Us

The burkini is all over the internet, thanks to France’s recent bans against the swimsuits from some local beaches. A combination of “bikini” and “burqa,” burkinis were designed to cater to modesty dress codes especially designed to cater to Muslim women.

What Is A Burkini?

The burkini is a full-body swimsuits, which could be likened to wetsuits with a hood. The bathing suit is designed in a way to cover all parts of the body except for the feet, hands and face. They are form-fitting yet loose enough to still swim in.

The bathing suit was frontpaged when journalist Nigella Lawson wore one to Australia’s Bondi Beach back in 2011. At the time, it was rumoured that Lawson wore the burkini to save herself from sun tan! But media reports were quick to rubbish this and said she was making a mockery of the Muslim conservative societies.

The swimwear also attracted attention when, in a bid to appeal to a wider audience, British mega retailer Marks and Spencer began selling the suits.

The Most Flattering Designs

Why Is It Back In The News?

This new design of swimwear grabbed headlines again after France banned the swimwear from some of its beaches. The body suit is designed in such a way that it leaves the face uncovered, so it doesn’t conflict with existing French law, which bans face-coverings.

But while the suit manages to avoid offending anyone’s sense of hygiene, in France the burkini is a grave threat to civilisation.

Corsica’s mayors have all instated the bans on beaches. Mayor David Lisnard of Cannes stated that the burkinis could create “risks of trouble to public order.”

Invalid ban it is!!! Neither conflicting with religion nor with the country''s laws so what is the problem. Do you place a restriction even on the right to swim?? When shackles are designed ,the key has to be there -we have found a solution to this as well .I don''t find a problem.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Burkinis are just like burquas-unacceptable. Swimwear is not supposed to be covering the entire body, for if it does, I don''t think we can feel the cool brush of water against us. Moreover, swimming with full-body suits hinders a swimmer when he/she tries to swim freestyle.

Deebashree Mohanty

Agreed. There is no debate on whether the ban is valid or not. It is completely "our" choice to swim in whatever we are comfortable in.

Urshita Sharma Delhi Public School, Eldeco

I think it depends on the person wearing it. If the person is comfortable then he/she can wear it, if not then don''t. But banning it would would not be right. I personally think that burkinis make a fashion statement which clothes that are short and not body covering also sometimes can not make. Burkinis also show the individuality of the person wearing it.

Burkini is posing no problems, neither it is harming anybody. The French Government is anti-islamic and does not support such attire is actually not tolerable by the people since it is up to them, what attire they want to wear. After all everyone would not prefer wearing traditional swimsuit!

Pranshu Choudhary INDIARAPURAM PUB SCH INDIRAPURAM GZ

The ban on burkini is a valid one.As the first thought of the government for the civilians should be ''SAFETY'' and not any thing else.Burkini covers every part of the body excepting some so it could be very easy for wrong men to take advantage of it and in concern of SAFETY of public it should not be like that.

Betsy Jaison PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

No the ban on burkinis cannot be supported in any form . It can protect you from allergies caused by dirt in water and will give confidence to girls to enjoy water sports with out any fear of revealing their body . i think we should ban bikines instead of burkinis.

SHUBH RANA DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL

No women likes to wear Burkini just to hide their beauty and grace. They wear it to protect themselves from the bad sights of men who are after their grace. By banning this dress- code , policies have taken a step ahead towards women''s freedom and rights.
