Is Internet In Classrooms A Distraction?

A recent study said that internet in classrooms is likely to affect learning outcomes, even among the brightest students…

When internet is used in the classroom, students tend to spend most of their time in activities like texting, emailing, checking social media, and surfing the net, which could lead to poor scores.

"The detrimental relationship associated with non-academic internet use raises questions about the policy of encouraging students to bring their laptops to class when they are unnecessary for class use," said lead author Susan Ravizza, Associate Professor Michigan State University in the US.

It will distract students

Welcome to the 21st century. A world where gadgets are omnipresent. There is a brewing belief that incorporating technology into education would immensely benefit the students. But many experts argue that distraction of an electronic device complete with internet access outweighed their use for note-taking or research during lessons.

In fact, there are many research that corroborate this view point. A paper published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that students barred from electronic gadgets in lectures did better in their exams than those allowed to use computers and access the internet. Another report by Microsoft found that widespread usage of smartphones has led to the deterioration of attention span from 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds today.

“Students are anyways surrounded by gadgets. A classroom is the only place which offers them a distraction free environment. It’s a no-brainer that if you give internet access to students, majority of them will use it for non-academic purposes,” said a teacher.

Teachers (whom we talked to) were unanimous in their view that listening to a lecture while texting or being on social media makes it difficult to learn and retain the information. There is also a danger of students accessing inappropriate sites.

Internet can make the learning fun and interesting

There are few who believe that Internet contains a wealth of knowledge and can be a great source for information gathering and research. Also, the world is getting more and more digitised and students needs to know how to function in this digital era. “I believe that technology can make learning fun and informative. We can access numerous topics with interesting graphics and animation. Moreover, teenagers have short attention spans and if the lecture is not interesting, we can lose the motivation to stay focus in class,” said a student.

Some students also mentioned that it’s convenient for them to take notes on laptops. “If someone decides to waste time on the Internet it doesn’t mean we all will. Also, internet permits video conferencing with schools around the world. From an educational viewpoint, it would be great to learn about foreign cultures through direct interaction,” opined a student.

"excess of anything is hazardous" is a saying that implies in all the situations.internet is a blessing that is not at all in disguise, internet is our necessity and we cannot deny this fact. But we should always keep ourselves balanced.Self Discipline is very important in a students life.Access internet but dont use it over the limit. In my opinion internet is a distraction for students but this could be curbed and we all should work in this direction to curb it.

I think that it can become a distraction if the students didn''t use it properly. Internet for the students who didn''t study is like one more way to distract from studies as they will say that they have to use"internet for studies" and rather than studying on it they will do any other things. For the intelligent students it will help them but to a limit only. In my point of view the use of internet in classroom can become another mode of distraction

Internet in the classroom is a distraction for every students because in free time they use it in a wrong way. Because our mind is uncontrollable,it will definitely distract our mind.

Of course not only Internet in class rooms proves to be a distraction but it is also an addiction. If the children have the online access then for sure they will use it for non academic purposes rather than assimilating academic topics, therefore it is better to promote direct teaching without any gadgets so that children could focus on their studies and not waste their precious time in doing silly things like watching movies online.

Even though facilities like Internet and Wifi in classrooms will further enhance the quality of education and boost the morale of children to perform well but only when used in a limit. If the children are obsessed with this then it would distract them and they would use Internet for wrong and non academic purposes. Hence every side has both Pros and Cons.

Anything if used in extent seems good. Some of us think its a power to gain knowledge and can be used in gathering information. But our new genration is simply going out of their way in the course of internet. It can lead children to distract their minds and most oftenly they would be surrounded by electronic gadgets preventing the natural environment. The way we are walking in one direction is better then getting distracted by other means.

No I don''t think internet in the classroom is a distraction. India is a well advanced nation in terms of digitalization Even our P M himself is very supportive in this matter. If internet is provided by blocking certain websites, then it can help children to utilize their time to gain extra knowledge. There will be discipline in classroom as children get less time to talk and distract. Teachers can give self study research projects and can make education demanding and motivating.

Well, it all depends about how students will use it and what limitation will schools put on it. If used systematically it can prove a boon! In this era technology is everything, and its good if schools provide a good opportunities for all students. So I say that internet in classroom must be installed everywhere.

I strongly feel that Internet is a distraction in classrooms as most of us spend time on useless activities such as texting, posting personal stuff on social networking sites etc. This distracts them as they can''t resist the temptation to see how many likes they have got or what their friends have replied etc. This hinders them and hampers their academics.

Even though Internet is an educational tool , it can also be a source of problems if it is overused. Students will lose their interests in studies and the vocabulary skills of the students get deteriorated because of using spell checkers frequently . It can diminish overall in-person education if students become completely dependent on it.

It is indubitably a classroom distraction because apparently when any child or even a youngster is given the liberty to do something related to surfing the net, they tend to grow really savage and naturally misuse the allowance and deviate from what they are actually supposed to do. The Internet is a really good feature for the classrooms.Today generation is the "Y" generation cause we ask too much question. I had tried to find every answer in the library but I was not able to do so. Whereas today we have the internet, I am able to find every answer to every question. I also got honor for my one answer, and at that time the internet really came handy for me.The Internet is the greatest invention of the century and if we are not able to use it then who will?

it will anyway make learning more interesting when students will cognate with concepts easily without doubts. learning anywhich ways.. bring to our the thought of ''safe surfing'', for that school may provide password to access only to a limited sites. or government may even make a site for learning.. children by this time know about the pros and cons of internet. ans so they are sensible enough to sense the dangers if any and harm themselves or others.

Robin Gautam NEW GREEN FIELD SCHOOL(KALKAJI_ALAK

Allowing students to use computers and the internet in classrooms substantially harms their results. Children usually spend their most of the time on internet at home and if they will spend rest of the time on internet in school also then I think they will get addicted towards it faster.

Students actually must not be using internet especially in classrooms. It must be available only in labs. They browse something else, apart from their academics, which leads to distraction. Using it less and using for important issues has to be permitted.

In my view it would be an asset, I don''t see anything wrong about this idea because when we talk about internet savy world so why not such a classroom. Moreover about it being a distraction, it would be no new things as students are now also distracted by internet even though they don''t use it in class.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I define it as an asset. I think it is an asset because we learn so much from there. It broadens are thinking capacity because it does not keep us limited to the book. We need to go beyond the knowledge provided in the textbook. And coming to distraction, I think it could be solved easily. We can put a firewall which will prevent the students from using certain sites like facebook or any other social networking site.

We, as students, have a very short attention span. That is the reason why we need lectures which is of a shot span of time. Otherwise, we would not even try to concentrate on learning. Internet access to students makes learning fun. We can watch videos online which is actually much easier for the students. There are many PDFs which is available on the net. This can be the source for notes. Learning can be made interesting with the help of internet.

Internet in the classroom is really a effective measure to improve learning. Internet has given education new heights. And when it comes to Internet being a distraction in classroom, I totally oppose this under proper teacher guidance and some blocking of some sites will surely lead Internet as a beneficial tool in child''s learning.

Using of internet in classroom will reduce the amount of books and children will free from heavy bags. If we use the internet we''ll get extra knowledge. If we use internet in limit it will good for study but if we use in over the limit or use for social media chatting any other unnecessary activity it will becoma another mode of distraction. According to my opinion, internet is a great source of learning for students of all ages. Internet gives us a wider view of any topic we wish to study. It makes learning anything extremely interactive and fun. I wouldn''t ever think of Internet as a distraction, of couse, excess use of it would be a distraction. But if schools encourage digital learning more than write-ups, it would save an immense amount of time and energy of students and every subject would be looked forward to.

every thing has both its advantages and disadvantages as well. Internet as well has some advantages and disadvantages. Some students can use it to gather some information related to studies but on the other hand, most of the students will use it in other things like getting on social media, playing games etc. it will distract their mind and they will not able to concentrate on studies and will ignore what teacher is teaching.

Internet in classrooms is really a very cool idea. It improves the quality and vastness of education and can develop interest among most of the students, who wish to study beyond their book. It would help them to go further inside the subjects, rather than restricting themselves only with books. But, at the same time Internet can cause distraction among some students, who don''t have self control. This plan would become a success, if only the necessary websites are made available to students.

If a student has a doubt in any lesson he can just go and ask the specific teacher who teaches a particular lesson Then the teacher can search in internet and clarify the doubt. Access to internet is good as informative but too much can spoil the career of the student. If its really needed then teachers have to take a particular attention on the students.
