Is Artificial Intelligence A Threat To Humanity?

Recently, tech titans Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk slugged it out  online over the possible threat that artificial intelligence (AI) may pose to the human race. What is AI and why should we be worried about it?

What is AI? Artificial intelligence is an area of computer science that emphasises the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. They perform tasks  requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.

Its history: The field of AI research was founded at a workshop held on the campus of Dartmouth College during the summer of 1956. Investment and interest in AI boomed in the first decades of the 21st century, when machine learning was successfully applied to many problems in academia and industry. Over the years, it has gained prominence with robots taking over human work leading to debates over its existence.

AI manipulating our lives?

Students react

I think we are over-reacting about the use of AI. If we humans are smart enough to build machine-intelligence, we wouldn’t give them the infinite power to overpower us. These machines will not dominate or threaten humanity unless we explicitly feed destructive programs into them.

Onkarpreet, class XI, GMSSS 19C, Chandigarh

AI will probably be a blow to human jobs, but whether or not it will affect humanity as a whole solely depends on how we utilise this innovation of ours. It could turn into a boon for mankind if used wisely as in the medical field, defence sector, etc. It could also turn into a Frankenstein monster in the wrong hands.

Shambhavi Sabhahit, class XI, GGIS, Pune

It is said we fear what we do not understand. But has it ever occurred, that what we created, which we understand entirely, has become the subject of our greatest fears? But AI may well end up replacing humanity in every way because after all, it is our most perfect creation.

Somrupa Riya Banerjee, class X, DPS Ruby Park, Kolkata

I think it can be a threat to humanity because loss of control of AI systems will become a major concern in the future. Furthermore, if this control falls into wrong hands, destruction will be soon and fatal.

Vidhi Khamele, class XII, Bhavan’s BP Vidyamandir, SKN, Nagpur

When viruses and hackers conquer the land of softwares, AI will lead to developments that challenge man and pose a threat. With the help of AI super beings can be created that could be put to use positively and negatively.

Sandra Sunil, class XII, MGM Model School Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram

How will AI impact our lives?

Experts react

Machines will overpower us: Recently, Facebook had to shut down an AI after its chatbots made up their own way of communication. With AI developing its own code with no human help, humankind is already entering the unknown. Such incidents are just the beginning of a bleak future scenario. A time will come when these machines rule our minds.

Vandana Suryawanshi, teacher, Vidya Valley school, Pune

Tech-dependent: Today we are living in a superficial world and hacking of network has become quite common. We are not using brains and have become tech dependent to make ourselves artificial. Machines have invaded our lives and from now on, if we fail to control its impact in key areas such as defence, telecommunication etc, humanity will become slaves and AI will become the masters.

Vini Kumar, teacher, Montfort school, Nagpur

Job loss: The rise of AI will lead to loss of jobs because when smart robots take over the world, be it taking orders in restaurants or counting cash in the bank, it will impact people who have been doing these jobs until now. That’s why Union minister Nitin Gadkari has banned the use of self driving cars in India.

HOW ZUCK AND MUSK SEE AI DIFFERENTLY

AI can improve lives

  • Facebook founder Zuckerberg says Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help better diagnosis of  diseases
  • AI can help make cars safer by reducing road accidents ØFacebook is among Silicon Valley’s largest investors in AI
  • It uses AI to offer targeted advertising and curate news feeds
  • Zuckerberg has created his own personal AI “butler”, named Jarvis, a voice-controlled home assistant

Biggest Threat

  • US entrepreneur Musk first warned that AI could destroy humans three years ago, calling it humanity’s “biggest existential threat”
  • Musk says even a benign situation with ultra-intelligent AI would reduce people to being “like a house cat”
  • Has called for proactive regulation because, “by the time we are reactive in AI regulation, it’s too late”
  • Musk founded OpenAI, a non-profit working for “safer artificial intelligence”

Yes indeed . At the rate of what we human beings are making AI will soon be the masters . It needs to be checked and used also in a limit.

Ishika Jalodia Amanora School

Access use of anything is harmful. Similarly, while AI helps us in our work by doing it for us, it is taking away our status and importance in this world. If we continue to use AI then a day will come when human beings will be ruined and AI will empower the entire world and that will be the day when we will regret inventing such a thing. AI should be used to the minimum limit if its use cannot be denied.

AI will have a great impact on human life. It will definitely bring changes. For sure, many people are going to become unemployed. If AI can take decisions then what are we for. Though in one way it is beneficial I couldn''t accept it. Humans will suffer a lot. Then there''ll exist a period in which we can''t avoid AI. I don''t want to suffer. Already because of cellphones many changes occurred. It has so many demerits as it has its own merits. I feel it is definitely a threat!!!

I don’t think at AI will become an existential threat to humanity. I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but we would have to be very stupid to let that happen.

I think in future the world will be controlled by robots and we will be be working under robots as workers and we will be cyborgs with electronic devices so we have not to stop developing robots but not the robots develop thier own code languages, then the world will be safe.

Krutika Agrawal The Millennium School

Its really very shocking to know the fact that AI is called as a threat to humanity where it was discovered to act as a boon not a bane. This was a new fact that came to me i.e. such shocking things can take place. It should be checked that any such actions should immediately be checked as the fact that AI is becoming a threat is agreed and accepted in large numbers !

Rucha Gavaskar GOKULDHAM HIGH SCHOOL-GOREGAON(E)

I feel that currently we are trying to involve AI even in the smallest of the fields.. our brains are getting slower by the day as AI is replacing every part of our life.. we don''t have to remember phone numbers..education is becoming virtual.. but along with that yes it does have a lot of perks.. for example it has helped human life by helping us fight diseases better.. and if we are able to keep our interests at bay and use AI smartly and let our brains work.. we''ll be fine :)
