Is Aggression The New Cool? Discuss

The Times NIE campaign on mental health and rising aggression among school students: Part 1

Part A: Identifying the problem

School teachers say aggression has increased among students. “It used to be restricted to bad language, but now, every other day, we are breaking up fist fights,” says Shweta Agarwal, who teaches class VII and VIII in a city-based school. Agarwal says the cases of bullying are also on an upward spiral and they are no longer restricted to older students.

Although every school has a counsellor,  calming students has become an uphill battle. Dr Amit Sen, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Delhi’s Sitaram Bhartia Hospital, agrees entirely: “We cannot ignore that we live in a patriarchal society where being an angry type is considered macho and has social acceptance. These days students feel the need to be aggressive to get things done,” he said.

Is aggression the new buzz word?
A few years ago,  Mumbai-based Association of Adolescent and Child Care in India (AACCI) surveyed schools in Mumbai and Gurgaon, and found that aggression was thought of as being a “cool tool”. According to this study, students believed that shouting is the only way to be heard and that leads to aggressive behaviour. Call it a modern-day bane but there is violence everywhere and young children tend to pick it up. According to Dr Jitender Nagpal, a child psychoanlayst,  too much time in front of the television or computer or playing violent games can blur reality leading to aggressive behaviour.

Violence has appeal
According to a survey, children-based shows like ‘Tom and Jerry’, ‘Oggy and the Cockroaches’ and ‘Doraemon’ glorify aggression. “Hulk has become a role model because he can smash everything around. Teenagers say Hulk is way better than being a meek, kind and docile superhero. Aggression has become the new ‘must-have’ quality,” Nagpal adds.

Give anger its due
There is a small upside to anger so long as it does not morph into aggression. Students need to be taught that it is alright to get angry or to vent a grievance. But hurting someone in a fit of rage is wrong.

Aggression is the major problem in schools and even in the state. This leads to deaths (a man killed a man on road because unknowingly he was clashed with his bike), aggression is due to impatiency shown (when someone use abusive words -beating them) this is what all aggression cab do.

This can be controlled and we all can be relieved from this problem by inviting positive thoughts , think positive , be calm and patient.
