Good Looks Or Good Acting? Your Take

Youth Reporters Take Their Pick

This week, we see two very different types of movies hitting the screen. One, that stars the handsome jodi of Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif flaunting sizzling chemistry and toned bodies and the other featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sohail Khan where the former dons the hat of a golfer!  While critics have good things to say about Siddiqui's acting in comedy drama 'Freaky Ali',  they have not been so kind towards 'Baar Baar Dekho' which has managed an average opening at the Box Office.

(Nawazuddin Siddiqui)

Does good acting score over good looks then? "I think it all boils down to the script.  If the story is good and dialogues are strong,  then the movie automatically does well. Good looking actors are an asset but not the only ingredients of a Blockbuster.  In this case, Freaky Ali is  a special project,  the story is good and Siddiqui is the icing on the cake.  It's still early days to write off 'Baar Baar Dekho', " trade analyst Komal Nahatta tells you.

Do you think an actor in Bollywood is recognised more for his looks than his acting skills? We asked Youth Reporters and this is how they reacted. Post your thoughts in the comments sections.

Youth Reporters Say It's Your Talent That Ultimately Matters.

These "so called" actors of these days all have great looks, great hair and a chiseled body, but when it comes to acting they basically can't do anything. Some play the same boring roles in every movie and the worst thing is that people watch these movies. Nawazuddin is one of the greatest actors of Bollywood right now. The man takes up different roles and nails them perfectly. He has just that extra inch of perfection that every actor needs.

Some average looking actors of Bollywood like Govinda never had six packs but did so well for himself. Another average looking actor is Ranveer Singh who is such a brilliant actor and whose movies are both commercially and critically acclaimed.

An actor should be defined by the quality of his performance. External beauty may be attractive but an actor should be termed as 'great' if s/he succeeds in successfully portraying a character. Other film industries other than Bollywood focus a lot on acting skills. The actor must be able to grab attention. Irfan Khan, Nasiruddin Shah,  Akshay Kumar are kind of average looking. Reconstructive surgery, lighting and make-up make it difficult for us to distinguish between actors with truly good and average looks.Shambhavi Sabhahit, class X, GG International school, Pune

Though not the only criteria, good looks are definitely a big plus in the entertainment industry because at the end of the day, these people work in the field of visual arts, where aesthetically appealing individuals are always better welcomed. That is not to say that people who aren't as good looking don't find encouragement. I think people like Naseeruddin Shah are amazing actors though they don't fit in the conventional mould of good looks. Durga Tilak, third year, Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Pune

SRK, the King Khan of Bollywood has less than average looks at best. I think it is more about personality,  charm and wit rather than just looks. Bespoke personality is a necessary attribute because of the large amount of people who look up to these Bollywood stars, but it can definitely be made up for in other attributes.Ojaswi Sharma, class XI, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula

An attractive appearance is surely an important factor but everything does not depend on that. A person may get noticed but what gets him the job is his acting skills. Some rather unconventional actors like Om Puri and Amitabh Bachchan were all about their phenomenal talent. Hitanshi Thakkar, class IX, New Horizon Public School, Navi Mumbai

Actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui are definitely changing the scenario. They are attracting the youth more towards acting. Few more like Irfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai and Nassiruddin Shah have conquered Bollywood only through their acting. Shreya Ahuja, class XII, Sakar School, Ahmedabad

Obviously good acting is the main thing required to make a movie hit but we cant deny the fact that good looks attract the viewers the most that is the reason why art movies dont get success they have very limited number of viewers on the other hand commercial movies with may be movie of navazudien handsome cast get very good response on box office movies of Govinda are exact example for this may be movie of navajudin have a great story.

No one can judge if the actor or actress is good looking or not.It is according to people''s perspective. If i find a actor very good looking maybe any other person would not find the actor very good looking. And of course the skills are very necessary. There are so many actors which define amazing skills like Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Manoj Bajpai and Irfan Khan.We have so many top class actors and actress in our industry.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

According to me, good acting is much more important than good looks because a film becomes a super hit when it has good actors. However, in today''s era, good looks are given more important. But it shouldn''t be so.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

Good actors are important but the highlight is the script. Script and dialogues are the USP of a film. It depends on a individual how he/she finds the actor good looking or not. Actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and many more are opening a new window of acting for the Indian youth through such good movies.

Garvit Sethia BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Acc to me acting shoud be the main motive to watch a movie . Acting only creates a deep impression on once mind not there''s looks and we all know looks can be defective.

Yashaswini nand Army Public School

No one can judge a person on his / her looks. Actor is a person who gets money for acting and not for good looks.

RATHIYARASI.JE Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Hey guys I think its about look acting

md.raheem uddin MADINA (SUPER) PUBLIC SCHOOL

Actors having talent is most important . its more important to have a good acting talent and doing a realistic acting like Nawaz and irfan khan .they are real talented hero''s i believe.

NAVYA MALHOTRA SWARAJ INDIA PUBLIC SCHOOL

It would be quite hypocritical to think that good acting is everything .I would consider it the second thing .The first one remains good looks .That is the basis of your stepping into the world of acting ,else you would remain at the back. The harsh reality is that good looks and relatively bad acting is compatible , according to today''s world but the vice- versa is not. If you are beautiful or handsome - you will not ''die''- for sure .If not movies, then you''ll have advertisements

Leena Bharti THE BISHOPS CO-ED SCHOOL Kalyaninagar

Acting is more important because looks don''t matter as much as acting matters. If the actor acts well his/her movie is a hit because people nowadays watch movies to back out from their busy life so i think that people like to watch movies with a good story and not the actors good looks . My take is that we should go for Freaky Ali than for Bar Bar Dekho .Watch both movies but Freaky Ali has good acting as well as story and of course a great actor.

Vidya Vishwakarma Vikas Vidyalaya

Looks fade with time but talent stays lifelong. So it is good acting which we must look forward for as the looks can attract for a short time but the talent makes u lifelong admirer of the person

AVANTIKA SINGH R.D.RAJPAL SCHOOL(DWARKA)

It''s truly aid that never judge a book by its''cover.so we don"t have the right to classify on the basis of his looks or acting. But yes, good acting is the main key for a super hit movie.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

Agree that for a movie to be successful good looks are required but the thing that is required the most is the character, talent and personality of the actor.

Kritika Malhotra Indira National School

i feel that good acting skills is what makes a movie good. if the character of the protagonist or anyone for that matter manages to touch your heart, then you have seen a good film. of course, promotion and good looks do attract public.

Bhvaesh Sachdev sindhi model sr sec school

Today many people have entered into the Bollywood just because they are attractive.Rather than charm ,beauty, and body the people with pure and natural acting skills should be brought forward. This wasn''t the situation when actors like Raj Kapoor were present, and in those days people with perfect acting skills were brought into the industry. This is the main reason why today we cannot imagine a substitute for actors like Shahrukh khan and Govinda..

Yashna Arora GD Goenka Public School,Model town

What if a book had the most transcendental cover in the world and the worst plot? Or what if a sword had a scintillating golden cover but the most blunt edge, unable to pierce even through a paper? What good would it be for? Similar is the debate being considered- How on earth can good looks compensate for good acting? Beauty is but skin deep, you see

Dev Manwani FR AGNEL MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL-AMBERN

good acting is the main thing which an actor needs to attract peoples attention towards him/her. if he/she lacks the quality of acting, then he cannot be called an actor. i don''t think only good looks are enough, but if you have beauty with brains its well and good.

Heti Desai SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR

I think that both are equally important even look

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

THE STORY MATTERS I think it all depends on the story line if the story itself strong enough then looks of the actors doesn''t matter. So if the actor has good acting skill then external look will not be a constraint. Viewers will be attracted by the looks at the initial stage but to be successful for longer period in this" glamour" world, talent is required.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

We cannot judge a movie by the actor''s looks. Actor''s look plays only one percent of its success. Movies success depends 90% over the script, acting skill of the actor''s, direction skill of the director, camera man and the supporting staff .

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Hats off to actor''s that really act well and good looking, but movies are mostly not observed on the good look of an actor but it''s acting and the story of the movie

Shubhangi Pathak BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

A script gets alive only through great enactment of the emotions it portrays. Therefore,at the end of the day it is good acting which steals the show.Good looks are secondary.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

More than good looks actor must shine in their skill of acting. Because in olden days people just admired SHIVAJI not for his looks but for his acting. Similarly, nowadays people admire good acting than good looks.

Harini.V Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Looks matter only to some extent. Good acting, speaking and dancing skills also matter for a successful career in acting.

Vishnu Varthan J Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

We should not judge by look There may be a rich heart under a poor coat. These moral thing may be told in the movie. Good actors receive awards. They receive award by seeing the acting not by the look. So we should see good acting.

saniya syed KENEDY GLOBAL

someone said '' never judge a book by its cover'' a persons outer beauty doesnt , if a persons heart is clean and pure he is filled with beauty . so good acting is more important acting is a skill , look is a show off

saniya syed KENEDY GLOBAL

good acting if you have heard the proverb " never judge a book by its cover " you should know that however a person looks doesnt matter you can see a persons outer beauty , but maybe a person with bad looks has a skill everyone are good their way
