Get Lessons On Banking From These Kids

Amid countrywide chaos unleashed after demonetisation, Children’s Bank, a small savings bank run by kids in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency (Varanasi), is helping scores of low-income families tide over the crisis

No queues: Unlike chaotic scenes witnessed at banks in cities, the Children’s Bank at Varuna Nagram colony presented a picture of orderliness. As children formed small queues outside the bank, Amrita (12), daughter of a saree worker, and Vikas (13), son of a motorcycle mechanic, withdrew small amounts of money to help their families meet daily expenses.

Simplified banking: Like scores of other children, Amrita and Vikas too had deposited their pocket money in the bank to meet exigencies that they were facing today.

Initial days: The bank came into existence in 2008 and in 2016 boasts of over 1,800 account-holders (all kids).  The total deposited amount as of now is `35,426, of which `19,879 has been withdrawn. Any child up to 13 yrs of age can open his/her account. Khushi (13), who studies in class VII, is the manager of the bank.

What some kids said: “I have withdrawn `2,300 to help my parents tide over this crisis,” said Vikas. From his meagre earnings, Vikas deposits `10-20 daily into his account at this bank. “Since my father could not manage to get his `500 note changed due to rush in banks, I withdrew `50 to buy vegetables,” said Amrita, a class VII student. tnn

I am very optimistic on India. Even if one of my ideas contributes to making a difference to the lives of 1.3 billion Indians, it will be huge for me. I if demonetisation helps quicken digitisation, the temporary pains may be worth going through

How the children’s bank can impart lessons to adults

This is a striking example of the will power, creativity, self initiative and strength of youngsters. This inspires a similar hope in every child.

American teens earn while they study, thereby becoming responsible. By saving money, youngsters in India can pick up tips on earnings and expenses.

This kind of banking proves that youths can empower the nation. From an early age, kids can be taught about the importance of banking.

Excellent example shown by kids. They demonstrated the discipline needed to stand in a long queue.

This will motivate kids to become responsible and help them understand the value of money.

Kid sent `1,000 to PM to clean Ganga

A boy from Chennai, G Shashank of Madipakkam, who won `1,000 in a competition, sent his prize money towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ganga cleaning drive and received a reply from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

In a handwritten letter to the PM he said he loves to do ‘natural work’. Since he identifies Ganga as the “religious river of our country, we have to maintain it”, he says. In the letter, written neatly on a foolscap paper with pen, the 10-year-old elaborates that he had won the first prize in the IMCT competition that was organised by AM Jain College in Chennai.

It was a competition in devotional Sanskrit, titled Sri Saraswathi Prarthanai. He also stated that he had won the first prize in the devotional competition the last time it was held – when he was in class III.

A student of DAV School in Adambakkam, Shashank profusely thanked his teachers for their guidance. In a bid to save the environment, his passion at the moment, the boy does not use plastic and polythene bags.
