Gendered Products Have A Deep Impact. Agree?

Disgusted by the spurt in crimes against women, Bollywood actors have come out in the open to talk about this menace and voice their opinion on ways to curb it. “It’s not about teaching our girls the way to behave or dress in the public; it’s about making our boys sensitive towards the issue. I will not tolerate it if my sons misbehave with girls and that lesson begins at home,” Shah Rukh Khan said recently.

Similarly, actor Akshay Kumar said, “Why do we have to differentiate between boys and girls in the first place?” Well,we start differentiating with our sons and daughters – and that could be construed as the reason for the spiralling crime against women. The differentiation starts very early; most toys on the shelves come in either blue or pink. It’s only in the 1940s that this trend started, companies figured out they could sell more just by changing the colour, fonts and language on the packaging.

“The segmentation started with Barbies and Hot Wheels. Parents were very clear in their heads —  get a gun or a car for a boy (because he is supposed to be macho) and a doll for a girl (she is soft and feminine)! What started as a marketing gimmick became a norm,” said Neel Thakur, an activist.

What Are Gendered Products

Products which come packaged separately for boys and girls. There is little difference in the product itself – minute changes in the colour packaging and wording on it.

Some examples

1 Cotton swabs for boys and girls.
2 Breads for boys and girls. The one for boys reads ‘loaded with calcium’ while the girls’ bread is high in protein.
3 Earplugs for boys comes in a blue package while the pink ones come with a tagline – ‘even girls need earplugs’!
4 The block stacking game, Jenna, got a feminine face-lift in its Girl Talk iteration.

Is Gender Segmentation Essential?

ØThe problem is that gender specificity has become so entrenched in our mindset  that boys fear to choose (or like) anything “pink” or “purple”. They feel it takes away from their masculinity.  This gives rise to bigger stereotypes in their minds.
Nandita Das, actor

I love the blue colour but I remember my parents trying very hard to make me love shades of pink. I don’t see why products need to be a segmented in any way. But before blaming the companies, let’s do some soul searching. It is we, as parents, who discourage our children from playing with toys that we believe, do not ‘gel’ with their gender.
Ritu Dhawan, author

Gender differentiation which started out with silly products has made its way into other genres as well. Suddenly there are sports for boys and sports for girls. I am glad some of us have managed to break away from the shackles. Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go.

Why do we have different shampoos for boys and shampoos for girls? Isn’t hair growth the same for both? Such segmentation has a deeper connotation.

The last time I went shopping,  there was a cold cream for boys and a different one for girls in two different shades. How predictable! But scientific research has proven that skin type has nothing to do with gender. Why a separate cream for boys!

It’s sad that gender differentiation is being taught t a very tender age. Girls are supposed to like only kitchen sets  while there are trains for boys.

Gender equality is promoted to some extent by gendered products. Its the thought proccess which influences gender inequality. Products are only sold because we purchase it. Our thought proccess orders us to purchase the product .

Yessss.. gendered products are very irritating especially for neutral products. We cant go around doing this differenciation in every possible field.

Gender inequality remains a major barrier to human development. The disadvantages facing women and girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education, political representation, labour market, etc — with negative repercussions for development of their capabilities and their freedom of choice.

Yes, I strongly believe that these gendered products are a nuisance as these products shows the disparity between girls and boys as they affect the thought process of children that makes them think about the very limited scheme of items provided to them for example the colour pink is a no-no for boys to go with and a wrestling fan merchandise in a girl''s hand is an unexpected surprise for people.

quarath-ul-iyan bethesda international school

Of course, yeah!! its actually a nuisance. I have seen this gendered products, in stores there are different face-wash or shampoos or body lotion for men and for women in different sections. Come on, after all we all are human beings. Why is this "so called" gendered products have come into our brains?

Prerna Agrawal St. Xaviers High School, Hingna

Different products for different genders is a nuisance. Both male and female are equal in each field.

RIYA MITTAL Convent of Jesus and Mary

Gendered products really don''t make sense.Even kinderjoys come in different colours for girls and boys.If a girl says that black is her favourite colour or she isn''t interested in household chores, everyone demoralizes her.

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

Instead of spreading awareness regarding the issue of incorrect way of differentiation among girls and boys. These products are indirectly demotivating the people to stress on the issue . The worst thing is - on the basis of colour , the products of girls and boys are differentiated.

Animikha Dutta Dhar Mahadevi Birla World Academy

These products are a nuisance . Kinderjoys even come in different packs. The whole purpose of masculine coded products is normally to distance them from being feminine. Shops and companies should promote gender equality but they are doing the opposite.Watchs are different for girls and boys , they do tell the same time.Even maggi in Germany comes for girls and boys differently they are called princesses and firefighters. These products do change a child''s mindset about the genders.

We speak about the equal status for boys and girls, but when faced with real situation , what is preached will be forgotten. Recently my brother faced a similar situation in school. He was wearing a sweater with button and PT sir who is in charge of discipline caught him and told these types of sweaters are for girls and boys should wear sweaters without buttons. Are we trying to create a gender discrimination among the young innocent mind??

P S Geethanjali Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan S.V Vidyalaya

Yes,of course there are various products I know which discriminate saying boys and girls. There are different deodorants for boys and girls. If we ask why they say girls love flower scent whereas boys don''t.Girls are always discriminated. They say girls should stay in household whereas boys go out and work.In olden days girls were even not allowed to step outside of their houses.I think our society is going backwards where girls are discriminated.
