Expert Speak On Relationship Issues

Q. I feel insecure when my parents fight and due to this I am not able to share my problems with them. I end up sitting alone and crying. How can I deal with this difficult situation? - A Troubled Teen

A.  Troubled Teen, I really do understand what you are going through because when parents repeatedly use hostile strategies with each other, children can become distraught, worried, anxious and hopeless. In fact, studies that follow children over a long period of time show that children who were insecure in kindergarten because of their parents’ conflicts were more likely to have adjustment problems in the seventh grade. Take heart and try following these two effective strategies.

1. Talk it out: Try talking to your parents about the discomfort you feel when they fight; share your feelings with them openly. To discuss about it in depth and to communicate your thoughts well, seek counselling (near your home or even in your school). If the situation allows, contact someone else like another family member for help too.

2. Hobbies help: Engage yourself in one or two hobbies. Also, have a healthy diet as well as an active social life. Try meditation practice to boost your confidence and also to have a meaningful pastime. And go for the hobby you choose wholeheartedly.
