Everyday Products We Must Stop Using. Discuss

In a bid to protect marine life, environmental group Greenpeace has called for a ban on plastic microbeads — made of solid particles less than five millimetres — found in many personal care products, including toothpaste, face wash, etc. Microbeads are too small to be picked up by water treatment plant and are swallowed by sea creatures, leading to their death, and damage to the ecosystem, they say. Here’s how we can do our bit and replace them with safer alternatives....

Plastic straws and spoons:
Studies have shown that 80% of marine debris found in the ocean is made of plastic, including plastic straws. Use a glass straw (buy, wash and reuse) and you will reduce your share of carbon footprints. Also, ask your elders to replace small plastic spoons used in masala containers with wooden spoons that have a longer shelf life.

Toothpaste/skin care products with microbeads:
Many toothpaste brands contain non-biodegradable plastic microbeads, a leading contributor to eight tons of plastic that contaminates marine life annually. Ditto for cosmetics with microbeads that don’t serve any purpose. Don’t use them; instead, read the ingredients list and choose eco-friendly products.

Styrofoam products: Manufactured from polystyrene — a petroleum-based plastic that is non-biodegradable with harmful repercussions on health, styrofoam is used as daily use cups and plates for large scale social events. Replace them at your events with eco-friendly cutlery such as bamboo, wood bark, leaves.

Wooden chopsticks: Enjoying meals with wooden chopsticks looks harmless but four billion trees are cut every year to make 57 billion chopsticks, according to data by Greenpeace. Ditch them, and use your regular steel fork/spoon.

Polythene bags: Plastic bags choke the landfill and produce toxic gases when burned, adding to the pollution. Buy a reusable grocery bag for your daily needs – for the sake of your lungs and Earth.

I have stopped using polythene bags and plastic spoons. And I am also not using Packaging. Because we made very much waste of Packaging. I always give Packaging of anything to shopkeeper. So he can package other thing in it. We need to cut many things only for making card paper.

V.Ananya D.A.V. Public School

Yes , we use only steel spoons instead of plastic ones . Moreover we make it a point to not stuff straight-from-the-stove hot food into our lunchboxes (WHICH ARE PLASTIC)because there is a risk of consuming the small amounts of plastic .

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Despite the ban, polythene bags are still under circulation. Why don''t people get that they should stop using these non biodegradable products for their own good?

Mayank Seth Anandram Jaipuria School

Many people stop or prevent the use of objects which are harmful for our environment, but still majority of people don''t get it.It''s obvious as issues related to environment are neglected in our country. Parties talk about modernism and technology, but they don''t get it that if our environment is damaged than how can we do anything. Issues related to environment should be a national topic on which national parties debate on.

Vishakha Bhalla BOSCO SR.SEC.SCHOOL( PASCHIM VIHAR)

Use of these products should be banned now, as they are a great threat to ecosystem.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Although these things have become the essentials of our lives today, being perceived to all their disadvantages , we must strive to reduce their utility .

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

I too have reduced their usage to an extent.

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

We must stop using polythene covers and start using cloth bags. Thus we can pave a good way to better environment.

Thank you for the information. But I think it would be good if the government bans these products for the welfare of the citizens.

Sagar Mittal Somerville School Greater Noida

You are asking to use wooden spoons instead of plastic spoons but at the same time you are asking to boycott wooden chop sticks to save tress..sorry to say but i am confused what to do..

SNEHA - R Kulapati munshi bhavan's vidhya mandir

I agree, there is a pressing need to replace these products with greener ones.I have started using steel spoons instead of the plastic ones as they are hazardous not only to our health but also to the biodiversity.Wooden chopsticks are just luxuries and one can live even without them.

Vandana Subash City International School Wanowrie

Plastic is really drastic!! About one or two years back, because of my mother,my house has become eco friendly where we don''t bring plastic items, especially bags, unless there is an emergency.

Anusha Bhosle Wisdom World School

I do not support the usage of polythene bags we should instead use paper bags or cloth bags.

Vihan R. Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

I''ve stopped using polythene covers and started using the same cotton bag every time I go shopping. Sometimes I carry what I buy home and never take the store covers. People who use disposable wooden chopsticks, instead of using a fork or spoon, can use ceramic or metal chopsticks.
