Do MUNs Shape Future World Leaders? Discuss

The recent Model United Nations held at the Birla Vidya Niketan school in the heart of South Delhi, throws open a pertinent topic for us to debate. While dignitaries from various schools debate and negotiate in various cabinets at these MUNs, their confidence is notable.  So are the speeches which are often direct, sharp and loaded with points which could be debated at the highest political level.

But are these models really serving any greater purpose? Are they really giving us future world leaders?

Politicos Say This Is A Good Start

These model united nations are a brilliant concept.  It gives our youth perspective and makes them more conscious of the things happening around them. I would say it is a preparing ground for our children.  Everyone should be given a chance to participate in such MUNs.  Whether we get our future leaders or no,  only time will tell.  But we know that our future leaders will be better equipped to handle pressure situations.

Dr Sambit Patra, spokesperson Bhartiya Janata Party.

The purpose of these MUNs is to make our younger lot more aware.  And students take it to another level with their keen participation. It is not just shaping their personality, it is giving these children a forum to represent their voices.  These voices could one day be representing the country at a real UN. I think this is a very positive beginning and should be taken very seriously.

Raghav Chadha, spokesperson Aam Aadmi Party.

Contrary to popular belief, the youth today is interested in world politics and are fascinated by international relations. Model United Nations or MUNs work perfectly to bridge the gap between the youth and international issues. MUN conferences are essentially simulations of the United Nations.

What Is It?

These conferences held by schools, colleges and other educational institutions are academic and co-curricular competitions in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations and how the UNO operates. They follow the formal procedures to inculcate critical thinking, problem solving and analysis, and leadership abilities. They introduce young minds to the prominent issues which our world faces. MUNs break the stereotype of children being incapable of holding intelligent conversations on critical issues. Not only do the delegates discuss these topics but also they indulge in an in-depth debate about them. After two days of spontaneous and fruitful debate, they arrive at a consensus and formulate a unanimous resolution. This resolution serves as the solution for problems that this world doesn't seem to find.

This exercises their grey matter and gets the gears of their minds whirring. MUNs help in building the confidence of teenagers, something which is essential in the long run. They enhance lobbying skills which further leads to better persona. The weight of the global responsibility on these shoulders that have just got used to carrying schoolbags, these future leaders have an edge over the others when confronted with testing times. These conferences provide the exposure that one seeks when setting foot in the real world. Stepping into the shoes of diplomats instills a sense of empathy into the minds of adolescents. It offers a dynamic perspective and presents a new dimension of looking at problems which in turn, helps them develop a higher order thinking and enables them to connect with people facing different situations.

It is not just for good debaters, rather for visionaries. The passion that they show while solving problems gives us hope for peace, for which they are experienced in their inexperience. MUNs are the craftsmen, these children the clay. Their experience shapes them into better future leaders.

I feel MUNs are of great help. They make us look at the world with a different perspective. I think they make a child confident and make him share his views well.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

I have been to MUNs and the experience was so so good. The amount of debates and facts that come out are too good. It feels so good to be representatives in the international community and then follow all the rules followed during the UN sessions and then bring out viable and practical solutions in really good.

And talking of MUNs shaping future leaders, yes, they do. Obviously, when young people from different schools and regions gather up to discuss agendas of international concern, they would obviously learn a lot. The amount of facts and discussions that come up is what adds on to their experience. MUNs are really valuable.

My first MUN was rather confusing. It was a good learning experience, but I don''t really think the UN functions similar to a MUN. But the concept is rather good, and everyone must try it, atleast to find out where the stand in the world of debating.

I think that MUNs are helping hands in shaping great leaders. We are so fortunate to have an exposure to such a model of United Nations. This peacekeeping organisation has always strived harder to maintain peace all over the world. And I think that almost all the youngsters will be in favour of this noble idea and will strive harder to make it reach glorious heights.

I have been to quite a few MUNs, and they are very fun to be in. They test one''s critical thinking and speaking skills and improve them. They introduce the youth to diplomacy, laying the foundation to a possible career in it.

MUN helps all the students to express their talents. This method provides a stability to students. It really shapes our future. It is not waste of time. It is Need of hour.

I am going for a MUN conference this year..As of what I know,it is a very good platform for teens like us to discuss world issues from a lesser known country''s side..It also helps conquer stage fear...

Much like the United Nations itself, Model United Nations is helping bridge differences between people, not only from different countries, but also from different places within countries. Our viewpoints are becoming broader, our opinions are maturing, our learning curves are merging and above all we understand that there are problems that can only be hoped to get solved through cooperation and working together.

Things I Learned From My MUN Experience 1. Overcoming Culture Shock,2. It''s Okay to Be a Beginner,3. Be Sociable,4. Say Something, Say Anything,5. Don''t Forget to Enjoy it!.

what amused me most was the use of parliamentary language during the debates. From time to time, people would yell out: “Point of personal privilege due to inaudibility” (meaning: I can’t hear what the speaker is saying),”Motion to move to the previous question” (meaning: Move directly to voting), and other such phrases. Other delegates would loudly second or object to the same. And of course, there are no personal pronouns at MUN conferences. Everybody’s a delegate, not a he or she.

From the moment I stepped into my first conference I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, whether that means being a senator or a diplomat in a foreign country. INMUN has introduced me to an amazing world that i have no interest in leaving. Whatever my future holds I know it has something to do with my INMUN experience.”

When I joined Model UN on a whim, I found something I loved for myself. Learning about the world, interacting with people, fighting diplomatically over fiscal policy, Model UN is has helped me develop lasting friendships.

No doubt these MUNs help a child to nurture important moral value, boost self confidence and tesch them how to deal with complex problems.

I have never been to it but from what i have heard ,it seems a really great experience. I wish to go to one .

Model United Nations, as a matter of fact, accrues our knowledge about the current affairs. Not only it helps building our proficiency about the countries but it also gives us a better look on how to see the world and how policies are made. Once you encounter with MUNs, you have the urge to do more because you get the feeling that someway or the other your views matter and that can help to change the world.
