Dark Skin Is Not Subject For Joke

Recently actress Tanishtha Chatterjee created furore on the sets of a popular TV channel when she was "roasted" the wrong way. Chatterjee stormed out of the show which touts itself to be the Indian version of comedy roast.  Here celebs are insulted and abused at will. But Chatterjee saw no fun in the jokes around her "dark colour".

This is not the first time that a celebrity has talked about jokes based on their skin colour.

Nandita Das

The leading actress who is known as the face of Indian art cinema said colour biases are rampant in the film industry. So much so that even pay packages depend on your "colour". "It's everywhere.  It may not be very apparent but dark colour still features in the non wanted list.  Very few have been able to break this barrier.  And even if they have done so, they are not allowed to reach the zenith, " she said.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Another actor who rose to fame instantly, says success didn't come to him as early as it should have because he was not the typical" fair and handsome" hero.  "Fair skin is still sort after.  Only people have become polished to not let it seem obvious.  I have faced this many times. My make-up man used to struggle with me for days till I told him,  look I don't want to look fair.  I am proud of my colour and will go with it, " Siddiqui recalls.

But Is It A Joke In The First Place?
Comedian Vir Das said while the concept of a roast is to hurl insults at the participants,  skin colour cannot even qualify as a" joke". "It is not even funny. Forget about the complications of discrimination,  jokes on colour are not even laugh worthy," Das tells you.

Yes,  We Have Faced Jokes Based On Our Colour: Youth Reporters

I was selected to play the part of Cinderella in my school play.  But on the penultimate day,  my name was struck off and I was asked to play the role of her Maid! Everyone had a hearty role when I came out as a Bai! I was heartbroken.  I knew I had been given this demotion on the basis of my skin colour.

Aarnya Shah (name changed) class IX,  a popular school in Delhi.

I am always made to the the tribal girl in my school plays.  Whenever there is reference to coal,  my friends look at me and poke fun.  I feel very demotivated.

Akshay Anand (name changed) class X,  Noida school.

I am a great dancer with professional degrees to my name.  Yet I never make it to the school function cut off list. My friends joke about it saying that I was not in the list because I wouldn't  have carried off the red costume.  I felt miserable but am proud of my colour.

What Parents Have To Say

My six year old asked me what tone is his skin.  He said he didn't want to be brown and that he is "Chinese because they are brown skinned". We were aghast that all these discussions are happening at this tender age.

Namita Goswami,  parent.

My 9 year-old daughter was scrubbing her face hard one day. I asked her what the matter was,  she replied innocently that she wants all the darkness in her skin to dissolve in water.  She said it was making her the least attractive girl in her class.  I felt helpless.

Padma Dutta, parent.

Experts Speak

I am definitely not in favour of such jokes but the reality is that you cannot stop them from happening around your child.  It is better to prepare him/her to tackle these in a funny manner.  Give your kids a lot of confidence.  Teach them to love their skin and themselves for what it is. Show them other personalities of the same skin tone who have made it big.  Show then the world of opportunities that lies ahead of them.

No , dark is not a joke . If you have good facial features, your skin tone is nothing . I believe that what ever is your skin tone , if your are adored with a sweet smile , that''s enough to change the world.

Pallavi singh PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

Being dark skin is no harm scientifically, dark skin is due to presence of melanin in the skin which protects from sun''s UV rays. Dark skin people therefore are the stronger ones than those fussing in the sun and worrying about getting tanned. Even as far as facial beauty is concerned skin colour is no criteria . There are many people who are dark skinned but still look very beautiful and attractive.Does this mean that no one is beautiful in Africa?

Om Badiyani Sandipani

The colour of the skin doesn''t judge a person. It is his qualities which judge a person.

It''s never right to make fun of any one on the basis of colour.....Wil racism still exist??

My cousin has faced a lot of problems for being dark-skinned. Often times she has cried to me about the discrimination she had to undergo. There is nothing funny about being dark-skinned!

No,dark is not a joke.Nobody''s physical features can be joke who they are because they play absolutely no role in forming of their physical features,it is god gifted.

It''s wrong to crack joke on someone because he/she has dark skin because it is not his or her fault and there is nothing wrong to be with dark complexion. Now we are living in 21''st century and we should accept this fact.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

No, I have not faced jokes based on my skin colour. But indeed dark skin is not a joke, it''s a colour of skin gifted by God to that particular person. It''s not always that people white in colour win the beauty contests but even dark colour people. People often judge on the basis of skin colour, but, that should not be. A person should be judged on the basis of their talents and not skin colour or beauty.

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

Skin color of a person does not affect the personality of a person at all. Apartheid, which is separation on the basis of race, should not occur in India. A person with a dark skin tone may become very successful in life. Anyone can do something great in life or achieve success. If people with dark skin toned are discriminated, it is not a joke. Instead of making fun of them or criticizing them, we should motivate and encourage them in any way possible so that they do not feel discriminated.

According to me inner beauty is what matters.More than being fair from outside,it is important to have a good and helping heart which is truly fair..

Yes I have faced many jokes both in my school and home . But darker skin has more resistance towards cancer.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Without any doubt, Dark is no joke. It is all natural, God''s play. Plus, such comedy shows shouldn''t "roast" people on such basis. In a way, such acts on television promote more of discrimination.

Pragyamita Basu B.D.M. International

Having a dark skin is not a fault but having a dark and contaminated heart is definitely a fault in one''s personality. It is our behaviour and the intellect we hold that decides our personality.

VIDYA GAKHAR GD GOENKA PUBLIC SCHOOL A2 PASCHIM VIHAR

Having a dark complection is not one''s own fault.. It''s God gifted and no one can judge a person on the basis of their looks. A person with dark complection can be good at many things than a person with fair complection who''s good at nothing as " All that glitters is not gold"..!

Sharmeen Khan PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Being dark is not at all a joke. There are so many people today who broken the stereotypes. Dark is just another colour like white. Why do we even consider one''s physical appearance a matter of concern? It is for sure good to look good. But one can be happy in their ''uniqueness''. Thats what I term difference as.

Vishnu Varthan J Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Being a dark is not a joke. People should treat every one equally.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

No having dark skin tone is not a matter to be mocked upon we often judge the personality of people due to their outer colour and fashion but in reality the character of a person is depicted by his thoughts and perspective not makeup.
