Are You A Harry Potter Superfan?

Tell us how the series changed you...

On the 20 anniversary of Harry Potter, here are a few superfans who share how being part of the Potter world inspired them to do something different. Read through the stories, then tell us your own story in the comments section!

Superfan 1: Bengalurean Ginny Williams* who used scream in theatres when the book plots didn't match the film plots!
When she was visiting London last year, a trip to the platform 9 ¾ was a must for Bengalurean Ginny Williams* (name changed on request). "It was the Warner Brother sets that I really wanted to go to but couldn't because the dates to the studio were booked - they only take a limited number of people. So, I made sure to go to the Platform 9¾ store. I bought a few souvenirs and got a picture taken with the cart and a Gryffindor scarf," recalls Williams, a certified Potterhead.
Most Potterhead moment: "I have annoyed the hell out of people in the theatres during the movies screaming, 'But that's not how it is in the books!'", she says.

Superfan 2: Niharika Krishna who choose to do her dissertation on gender in Harry Potter
The post graduate student who is doing her MA in King's College in London, says she has been part of early morning queues to buy Potter books. "I've waited in line at 5.30am to buy the last two books. I have visited the Warner Bros studio outside London twice. I've watched Cursed Child on stage, I bought a rather expensive little sling bag that has the Platform 9 ¾ logo on it, and most recently, I saw a screening of Philosopher's Stone at the Royal Albert Hall with a 40-piece orchestra playing the score. Warner Bros has made a lot of money off me." But that's not all for Krishna.
Most Potterhead moment: 'Choosing to do a dissertation on gender in Harry Potter for her degree'. "It is also the most Raven claw thing ever," she adds.

Superfan 3: Krupa Hebbar, who started the Bangalore chapter of Harry Potter Alliance
For 22-year-old Krupa Hebbar, the book series inspired her to start the Bengaluru chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). A non-profit organization that was founded by Andrew Slack in 2005, initially to draw attention to human rights violation in Sudan, HPA today is a worldwide organization with chapters in USA, UK, South East Asia and Central Asia. Run essentially by fans of Harry Potter, HPA's vision is about turning fans into heroes. 'We are changing the world by making activism accessible through the power of story. Since 2005, we've engaged millions of fans through our work for equality, human rights, and literacy', says the website.

For Hebbar, the vision of HPA struck a chord. "I have always been interested in doing something about social issues whether its human rights, gender equality or education. And so when I heard about the Harry Potter Alliance, I decided to join it," says Hebbar. But when she found out that there was no chapter in the city, she decided to start it. The Bengaluru chapter, incidentally, is the first HPA chapter to be set up in India and Hebbar, the liaison for the Asia and Middle-east chapters. "What I like about HPA is that even though it has been set to tackle serious issues, the fact that everyone is a fan of the books makes it a more friendly community," she says. Currently, the Bengaluru chapter has 16 members, all of whom are college-goers.

Superfan 4: Sheeba Mushtaq and Pravitha Aravindaksham who opened a Potter themed restaurant

It was on a whim that Sheeba Mushtaq and Pravitha Aravindaksham decided to set up Two Friends Cauldron Restaurant that was themed after Harry Potter. To these corporates-turned-restaurateurs, it was the best way to show their love for the magical world that Rowling had created. "I am a huge fan of Harry Potter and the restaurant initially was my way of creating a place where all Potterheads could meet," says Mushtaq. There are handmade wands and brooms, and butter beer and Marauder's map on the menu. There's a replica of Platform 9¾ too. Owing to copyright issues, the restaurant today is not exactly 'Harry Potter world'. "We have had to change the concept of the restaurant a bit, including the logo," Mushtaq admits but that hasn't stopped fans from trooping in.
