Air Pollution Reaches Alarming Level

As predicted by pollution monitoring agencies, the air quality on Diwali recorded ‘severe’ levels. Delhi suffered the worst pollution as thick smog and smell of smoke in the air deteriorated the air quality drastically. Data from the central pollution monitoring agency Central Pollution Control Board showed that concentrations of Particulate Matter or PM 10 (coarser pollutants) was over 1,600 micrograms per cubic metre compared to a safe level of 100. PM 2.5, a standard measure of air quality, was as much as 14 times the safe limit. The situation was no better in other parts of the country. In Mumbai,  PM 2.5 went up to the hazardous level of 494. The condition was worse in Ahmedabad where PM 2.5 stood at 999,  almost 15 times more than the safe limit.  Kolkata witnessed ‘Unhealthy’ air condition. Down south in Bangalore, the Air Quality Index stood at the ‘Moderate’ level with PM 2.5 going up to three times more than the safe limit.

Health hazards
According to experts, this is a worrying trend. Prolonged exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 10 beyond the safe limits can harm the respiratory system as the ultra fine particulates can find their way deep into the lungs and also enter the bloodstream.

Nearly, one in 10 below the age of 5 deaths is linked to air pollution, warns UNICEF. According to its latest report, around two billion children live in areas where outdoor air pollution, caused by factors such as vehicle emissions, heavy use of fossil fuels, dust and burning of waste, exceeds minimum WHO air quality guidelines

I feel its now the time to carefully ponder over this issue. Its not always the responsibility of the government to think but we as responsible citizens need to take action against pollution. I feel burning crackers is the main reason behind so much of pollution. Since people are not taking any action on their own, now the government of India should actually ''BAN'' burning of crackers. Maybe this can solve the problem.

According to me burning crackers is one big traditional dogma which neither helps the person who burns it nor does anything good to our surroundings.

Climate change is one of the principle obstacles facing the world today. What aggravates this situation is the excessive pollution that we cause on a daily basis. It is impossible to live without access to clean air. Unless and until we, as a global community rise and take steps to prevent further deterioration of our environment, we''ll find ourselves in deep trouble.

Enjoyment of few minutes is leading to a dark future . If the same scenario will go on then a day will definately come when there will be only smoke in air no fresh air to breathe . It is a need of hour to curb the tradition of bursting cracker by which we can make a healthy society.
