5 Smokes/Day Would Cost A Crore. Know How!

NEW DELHI: Everyone knows smoking is bad for health. Even smokers know this very well. But what the smokers don't know is this: smoking burns a bigger hole in your finances than you can imagine. The World No-Tobacco Day rightly makes you aware about the health risks of smoking. But ET also tells you how it takes a big toll on your finances too. Those who think smoking is just a petty expense need to think again. If you are 30 years old and smoke five cigarettes a day, you would lose more than Rs 1 crore by the time you retire at 60.

Family medical expenses

Those who live with smokers become vulnerable to various health problems due to exposure to cigarette smoke. Children who grow up with a smoker parent can even develop seriously disabling diseases. In a family where just one parent smokes, the other family members have less immunity and fall ill often.

How To Stop People Around You From Smoking

1. Be a good anti-tobacco role model: If you don't smoke, don't start and if you do, then quit.

2. Talk money: Explaining the high cost of tobacco products and the effect it will have on snokers' other purchasing power might be a reality check for them.

3. Make your home stress free: Try to minimize stress at home which may trigger people around you (expecially teens)  to take up smoking.

4. Set your home smoke-free: Set limits that no one- be it your family, friends or guest can smoke inside the home. This will help control everyone's smoking behaviours

5. Be considerate: If your teen makes progress or even when he slips, be supportive. Congratulate them on their progress and encourage not to give up. It is equally important for you to not give up.

Tobacco-related diseases

  •  The most common, nearly half of all, are cancers of the lung and oral cavity in men, and of the breast and cervix in women.
  • The rate of occurrence of lung cancer is 11 per 1, 00,000 individuals and of oral cavity cancer, 10.1. The rates of occurrences of breast and cervical cancers are 25.8 and 22.0 per 1, 00,000.

Which is riskier? Smokeless tobacco or cigarette smoking?

Smokeless tobacco products are less deadly than cigarettes. On an average, they kill fewer people than cigarettes. Smokeless products are often promoted as a less harmful alternative to smoking, but they are still linked with cancers, especially oral and are deadly. And they have not been proven to help users quit.

E-cigarettes and Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS):

E-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are used as substitutes for cigarettes or other tobacco products. Marketers of e-cigarettes and other ENDS often claim the ingredients are safe. But the aerosols these products contain addictive nicotine, flavorings, and a variety of other chemicals, some known to be toxic or to cause cancer. The levels of many of these substances appear to be lower than in traditional cigarettes, but the nicotine and other substances in these products can vary widely because they are not standardized. The long-term health effects of these devices are not known, but they are being studied. (ANI)

Most of the people in this world needs money. That is they depend on it for every thing. So if a smoker learns how much he loses by smoking he would definitely stop smoking.

It is excruciatingly depressing that though we have rich elites roaming on the streets smoking cigarettes, but still India is a poor country. Tobacco industry is the only industry which kills its best costumers. Stop smoking and save your life s well as your money.

Smoking. It is a global menace. Although so much of awareness is being spread, it is really surprising to see the reluctance of the people to quit this habit. Everyday when I go out on the road I see at least 10 - 20 people smoking cigarettes. They either don''t understand or want to understand the ill effects of smoking. We the youth have to more aware and take steps to eradicate this disease...

This article is a good eye-opener. Even I was quite surprised when I saw how uneconomical this practice can be for a smoker. More articles and studies of this kind can prevent people from getting addicted to alcohol.
