16YO Saurabh Is Crowned Pistol King Of Asia

After a couple of near misses from India’s star-studded shooting team, it fell on a 16-year-old son of a farmer from Meerut to finally land a gold on the third day of the competition at the Asian Games on Tuesday. Saurabh Chaudhary, competing in his first seniors’ event, showed composure beyond his age to win the men’s 10m air pistol event with a new Games record score in Palembang and become the youngest Indian to bag an Asiad gold. This was only the fifth shooting gold for India in the history of the games. Another Indian, 29-yearold Abhishek Verma, also a first-timer at a major event, finished third to claim bronze. Chaudhary aggregated 240.7 while Verma had a total of 219.3 in the final.

There was more good news for the Indian shooting team, hit by allegations of star tantrums, bickering among coaching staff and young shooters’ temperament problems. Sanjeev Rajput, a veteran of many battles at 37, won silver in 50m rifle three positions. It was a remarkable achievement for Chaudhary. The junior World Cup champion was in Palembang having been picked ahead of the established Jitu Rai. His performance proved that the 16-year-old deserved the trust of the selectors.

At Chaudhary’s village, Kalina in Meerut district, there were celebrations through the day with family members exchanging sweets, attending to visitors and dancing to the beat of dhols. Saurabh is a Class X student and the youngest of three siblings. His father, Jagmohan Singh, is a sugarcane farmer, and mother Brijesh Devi a homemaker.“All of us are extremely happy for him as he has made the entire country proud. His father was always apprehensive about him pursuing a career in shooting but he has now proved himself before the world,” mother Brijesh Devi told TOI.

Saurabh became the youngest Indian to win a GOLD medal at ASIAN GAMES 2018. It is result of his inspiration and dedication towards his game. At a very young age he achieved this feat ,it is only because of the practice he made at the school level. All the schools in India should ensure that their students get regular sport periods and they should keep an eye on students that they are using their given time in a right manner.
