Selection Is Not In My Hands: Vijay Zol

The former Under-19 cricketer captain is poised to make it big after a bout of injuries and poor form. The youngest member of Royal Challengers Bangalore has set his sights high, just like his IPL team skipper Virat Kohli.

Q Since you have led the Indian team in the past, can you tell me how tough the role can be?
It’s not tough as the players know each other. We know each other’s strengths and shortcomings which makes my job easier. That’s one of the reasons why, as a team, we have been successful in the last couple of tournaments.

Q  In the IPL tournament, you play for Royal Challengers with Virat Kohli. What has he advised you?
Virat has advised me to be myself. He always tells me to be aware of my strengths and note the areas I need to work upon to improve my game. One piece of advice I really value is: pick up tips from talented cricketers, but absorb only those qualities that will suit your style of play and help you to improve your game.

Q Initially you were a right-handed batsman, now you’re a left-handed one. How did this transition come about?
I was a right-handed batsman till the age of four, when my father, a huge fan of English cricketer David Gower - who was also happened to be a left-handed batsman – asked me to make the switch. Since the switch happened at a very young age, I have been used to this style of playing. Now it comes naturally to me.

Q What have you learnt from your seniors like Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand and Mohammad Kaif?
Their aggression on the field. In addition, I have learnt that it is important to lead by example.

Q What was your strategy for IPL?
I did not have a specific strategy as such. But as a team, we believed in facing challenges together as one unit and stay positive no matter what the situation was on the field. Also, we worked on bettering our performances without worrying so much about opponents.

Q When can we expect you to be in Team India?
I never think about it. My job is to play good cricket and focus on performing well in every match. I haven’t prescribed any timelines for making it to the national team. At this point it’s all about learning and enjoying the game. Selection is not in my hands, so I don’t worry too much about it.
