Kohli’s 154* Takes India to Victory

He may have silenced his detractors with a fine knock here but India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, assessing his batting in recent times, said "I am losing an ability to freely rotate in the middle". Dhoni struck 80 off 91 balls and shared a 151-run partnership for the third wicket with Virat Kohli (154) to guide India to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the third ODI and help the hosts take a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series. The captain moved himself up to number four.

Jadhav's magical arm
Kaedar Jadhav is not known for his bowling. A domestic heavyweight, the Maharastra player, in his 78 domestic List-A games has only one wicket to his name. But in his 10 one-day internationals Jadhav with his innocuous looking offbreak has managed to take six wickets. On Sunday during the third ODI he took a career-best 3 for 29 and his first scalp of the evening was probably the most crucial. NZ skipper Kane Williamson looked in terrific touch before the spinner was introduced and in a bid to sweep Jadhav, Williamson was undone by a straighter one and was trapped in front.

5 for 27
After 28.2 overs, New Zealand were sitting pretty at 153 for 2 with two well-set batsmen in Tom Latham and Ross Taylor. Taylor had applied himself well for the first time in the series and was reaping the rewards when a peach of delivery from Mishra beat the former NZ skipper all ends up. Mishra bowled a flighted one and Taylor was drawn in for the drive, but was beaten in the air and the ball spun away after pitching leaving him in no man's land. Dhoni obliged behind the stumps and the flood gates opened. Jadhav was brought back and he claimed Corey Anderson with a full toss and Latham threw his wicket away popping a simple catch to short cover. Between these two wickets, Mishra added Ronchi's scalp to his name and NZ from a healthy 153 for 2 slumped to 180 for 7.

Neesham comes to the party
The big-hitting prowess of Jimmy Neesham had fast-tracked the 26-year-old to the New Zealand setup but despite playing 21 ODIs Neesham had not had a match worth remembering. But all that changed at Mohali when he revived the NZ innings with a magnificent counter-attacking 47-ball 57 to help NZ to a competitive total. He combined with Matt Henry for an 84-run stand for the ninth wicket and helped NZ take 73 runs in the last 10 overs.

Ross Taylor hands Kohli life
Virat Kohli in a chase is a monster. Give him a chance to survive and he will eat you alive. With 154 not out off 134 balls he did exactly that in India's seven-wicket victory over NZ in the 3rd ODI. Ross Taylor handed Kohli the life and well as they say, rest is history. That had to be the turning point of the match because if Taylor had held on the straight forward chance created by Matt Henry in the fifth over, India would have been three down for just 23 runs. NZ had positioned Taylor for Kohli's glide towards third man and Kohli attempted the shot popping on to Taylor - a regulation take one would have thought - but Taylor could not hold on to it. A very costly miss for sure.
