India Finish With 66 Medals At CWG 18

The 2018 Commonwealth Games has become India’s third most successful CWG of all time, with a 200-plus contingent delivering 66 medals to outdo the 64 from Glasgow four years ago and finish behind the 101 from Delhi in 2010 and 69 from the 2002 Melbourne Games.

India finished with 26 golds, 20 silvers and 20 bronze medals at Gold Coast, thus settling at third position on the medal table behind Australia and England.

The first medal of the Games came from weightlifter P Gururaja, who won silver in the men’s 56kg event on day one, while the final medal came on Sunday as the men’s doubles badminton pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to England’s Marcus Ellis and Chris Landridge in the gold medal match to claim silver.

India’s shooters were the most successful, with a combined 16 medals (seven gold, four silver and five bronze) followed by the wrestlers who delivered 12 medals (five gold, three silver, four bronze) and weightlifters and boxers with nine. Five gold medals, two silver and two bronze came from weightlifting and three each came from boxing.

Also dominating were India’s table tennis and badminton players. In all, India won eight medals in TT which is the best for any CWG: three golds came from Manika Batra (the first Indian woman to win an individual gold) and the women’s and men’s teams, Manika and Mouma Das won silver in the women’s doubles and three bronze medals were claimed by Achantha Sharath Kamal won bronze in the men’s singles, Manika and Sharath in the mixed doubles and Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty in the men’s doubles.

In badminton, India’s shuttlers brought home six medals at Gold Coast, surpassing the four from Delhi 2010 — gold in the team event, gold for Saina Nehwal, silver for Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu, bronze to Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy in the women’s doubles and today’s silver in the men’s doubles.
