Aaliyah The Swimming Sensation

Aaliyah Singh, a student of DPS Noida has represented the state of Uttar Pradesh on numerous occasions and has come out on top. She has won gold in many categories during CBSE Nationals last year. She spoke on how she started her stint as a swimmer, facilities sportsmen get in the country and her big inspiration:

Q How did your tryst with swimming begin?
About five to six years back, I took it as a hobby during summer holidays. It was only after I started to win medals that my parents got serious and enrolled me with a swimming coach.

Q What do you have to say about the current scenario of swimming in India?
We are not there yet. As far as international level is concerned we are catching up. I do feel that the access to swimming pools and able coaches of international level would expedite the process.

Q You have earned national success at an early age, what are the things you learnt across various youth levels?
Success is a gradual process. I have been working hard for years to achieve where I’m today. Representing India is my ultimate aim. I have learnt that there is no short cut to success. Proper guidance from coaches, balance diet and healthy competition can take you to unimaginable heights.

Q Any swimmers from the current generation that you look up to?
It has to be Michael Phelps. I want to emulate the way he won medals at the Beijing Olympics. Not to miss out is Ruta Meilutyte a Lithuanian Olympic gold medalist. I want to break records like her.

Q Do you consider any specific stroke your specially or strength?
Yes, it has to be the breast stroke. I do it with ease and have sort of mastered it.

Q What do you think of the current state of athleticism in India currently?
Unfortunately very poor but things have started to look better with each passing year.

Q There are not significant facilities for coaching or training – as someone who has been on the inside, what are your views?
Facilities, although very little, do exist but absence of proper maintenance of the facilities and lack of able coaches is the real downside. When it comes to coaches, they need to get their dues. Awards such as Drorna at State and National level is the need of the hour.
