‘My Focus Is To Stay Injury Free’

Deepak Chahar had become the first Indian male bowler to take a hat-trick in T20Is but the medium pacer thinks one-dayers are far more difficult and the pressure is greater than T20 cricket.

"According to me, ODIs are difficult. In T20s, we can concede 24 runs in four overs and not take a wicket but it will still be considered a decent effort. In Test cricket, we have to attack the batsmen and take wickets even if it means conceding runs. But in ODIs, we have to mix it up. We have to restrict the scoring and also take wickets. Hence, ODIs are more difficult," Chahar said.

"I have played sufficient one-day games with India A side and that has helped me to do well. I had a problem with the middle overs. In power plays you have to restrict the scoring and in the death you have to be careful as the batsmen will go after you. But the middle overs is an issue. I am still learning. I have played only two ODIs and there is still a long way to go for me," the 27-year-old said.

Injuries have been a bane for him and the Rajasthan lad wants to focus on staying fit. "As a sportsman, every player's dream is to play in the Indian team. I was playing in the T20s and now I got the chance to play in ODIs. It has been good for me thus far but there is still a lot of cricket to be played before the World Cup. My main focus is on fitness so that I can play all the matches and be available for selection. I want to make sure that the injuries that I suffered do not happen again."

Chahar is a quick learner as is evident from his rise in the team. "When I was playing Ranji Trophy the first year, I used to bowl at a speed of around 125 and then I suffered a couple of injuries and lost a few years. It was because I was trying to increase my speed. But I knew that I couldn't play for India at that speed and wanted to bowl around 140. Hence, I made a couple of changes in my stride, action etc.," he said.

"Early in my career, the focus was to develop a swing so to get wickets. Getting to the Indian team through Ranji Trophy is a difficult one. So I started focusing on white ball cricket. Swinging the white ball is more difficult than the red ball. So I worked on it. I have also worked on the Yorker in the last few two years," he said.

Chahar believes that variation is the key to restrict the rivals. "In the middle overs, we get four fielders outside the circle. I am used to bowling with two fielders and hence it is an advantage. It's all about the variations one can bring to the bowling. It's also important to bowl according to the given fielding. The West Indians are big hitters and love to hit the bowlers over the top. Therefore, one has to make them hit over the fielders so that there is a chance to get a wicket."
