My Astronomy Snapshots

An aspiring astronomer, I have been actively practising amateur astronomy for the last five years. I own two telescopes: one, a 10-inch Dobsonian telescope, the second, an auto tracking Celestron 6-inch reflector, fixed on an Advanced Vx equatorial mount. I also have a canon DSLR that I use with the telescope for photography. Over the last few years I have been studying the universe and photographed many celestial objects. Recently I won the second prize in a completion organised by IIT Khargapur - National Students Space Challenge for astrophotography.

  Comet

  • This is the comet, Lovejoy, currently visible in the sky near the constellation Andromeda. The image was taken with a shutter speed of 10 minutes from the Celestron 6-inch telescope on 26/01/15.

  Venus

  • This is the transit of Venus, a once-in-a-life time event that occurred on June 6, 2012. Photographed when the planet transited across the sun.

  Jupiter dual moon

  • This is a Jupiter dual moon transit photograph with the shadow of its 2 moons Io & Ganymede. The sun is shining from the left, on planet Jupiter. Also orbiting on the left is the lighted moon of Jupiter, Ganymede, which is further casting its shadow on the planet (seen just entering the rim of Jupiter from the left). Meanwhile, another Io is hovering midway over Jupiter, drowned in its light but casting its shadow over the right side of the planet and getting ready to leave the planet plane.

  Saturn

  • An image of Saturn taken on Jan 26, 2015. Being low on the horizon the image doesn’t look sharp but will be clearer when it comes close to opposition in a few months.

  Orion Nebula

  • The beautiful Orion Nebula (Messier 42) taken from my telescope and a canon Eos 1200D camera with a shutter speed of 30 seconds and 800 ISO. The nebula is a stellar nursery where 700 stars are being born in various stages. The image was taken on Jan 20, 2015.

Andromeda Galaxy

  • The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31). Below the galaxy is Messier 32, another galaxy, and above, is the galaxy Messier 110. The image was given a shutter speed of 1 minute.
