Flexible Smartphones Set For Comeback

Since past some years, tech companies have been showcasing flexible displays for smartphones as well. The technology, which still is in the concept stages, will go mainstream in 2018, claims Kolon Industries. Kolon is a Korean manufacturing company to the Korean Herald news website.

According to a report on Korean Herald website, The company currently boasts of the ability to mass produce colorless polyimide, a key ingredient required to make foldable devices. For now, it is supplying materials to tech giants in its home turf— Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

The company's colourless polyimide division head Kang Chung-seok told the website, "Around three to five tech companies are expected to mass produce foldable phones in 2018 globally. The devices will then grab around 20 percent of the total smartphone market here [South Korea]."

Chung-seok also predicts that the first foldable devices may come with a bend radius (minimum radius of something that's bendable) of 5mm.

"The bend radius of 1 millimetre is the most ideal but that may cause a safety issue. So, tech companies are likely to unveil the bend radius of 5 millimetres first and then gradually unveil devices with less bend radius," he said. More and more companies have started adopting foldable or curved displays. Samsung has been the early adopter of curved displays and now Apple too is being said to enter the bandwagon with the upcoming iPhone models.

It was previously reported that Samsung is one of the main suppliers of plastic OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone models. However, Bloomberg recently said that the South Korean tech company may not be able to meet the demand for the upcoming iPhone 8's displays. The report also claims that Japan Display and Sharp are testing OLED displays and are on track to meet the expected demand by 2018.

A flexible display is an electronic visual display which is flexible in nature as opposed to the more prevalent traditional flat screen displays used in most electronics devices. In the recent years there has been a growing interest from numerous consumer electronics manufacturers to apply this display technology in e-readers, mobile phones and other consumer electronics.
