Best Fitness Trackers Of 2016
Xiaomi Mi Band 2

One year back, in 2015, wearables like fitness trackers and smartwatches were destined to be the next big thing. However the bubble burst in 2016, with stalwarts like Pebble packing their bags and even the mighty Apple Watch failing to create a dent in the market place.

Fitness trackers are a great way to channel one’s gadget craze into something fruitful and use technology to make one fit, active and agile. Over time, fitness trackers have become cheaper and easier to use and we do believe they will eventually catch on. They genuinely do help one become more active and fit.

Let’s take a look at the 5 best fitness trackers of 2016:

(Note: We have only included devices which are available to buy in India)

1. Xiaomi Mi Band 2

The Mi Band 2 is available for just Rs 1,999 and offers the best value for money amongst fitness trackers. The Mi Band 2 comes with an OLED display which reads the time, heart rate, step count and so on. The OLED display lights up to show the time with a lift of the wrist, and tapping the button lets users view other information like steps taken and heart rate.

The Mi Band 2 also notifies the user about incoming calls and also shows alerts from different apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook. The Mi Band 2 has a lightweight and slim design, is IP67 splash-resistant, and comes with a hypoallergenic silicone band.

The device is compatible with the Mi Fit app, available on Android and iOS. Other than showing activity and sleep statistics, the app allows users to manage alarms and send incoming calls and app alerts, as well as reminders to move after sitting for too long.

2. Fitbit Charge 2

The Fitbit Charge 2 comes with an OLED touchscreen display which is much bigger than the one found on the previous Fitbit Charge HR. It measures distance, calories burned and active minutes and also tracks your sleep.

The Charge 2 offers multi-sport tracking – you can track outdoor running, treadmill running, walking and weight training, as well as bike, elliptical trainer and interval workouts. It also offers a shred of smartwatch functionality. You can get calls, SMS and calendar notifications on your wrist via your phone, but you can’t reply to them via the watch.

You can get the rubber strap in light blue, dark blue, black or purple. There are two more premium options in the form of lavender/rose gold and black/gunmetal.

3. Fitbit Alta

The Alta is Fitbit’s latest activity tracker and it measures distance, calories burned and active minutes. It has an OLED display, interchangeable bands, sleep tracking as well as silent alarms.

What sets this device apart is the fact that it has a modicum of smartwatch functionality built-in and allows for notifications to be displayed on your phone. However, it doesn't offer the ability to reply to notifications or answer calls.

4. Fitbit Blaze

The Fitbit Blaze is more of a fitness tracker that happens to offer certain core smartwatch functionalities. It is available for Rs 19,990 and can track steps, calories burned, quality and length of sleep, floors climbed, heart rate and workouts. It has an inbuilt heart rate sensor and also has GPS, making it less dependent on the smartphone for tracking location and activity data.

Apart from the fitness features, the FitBit Blaze also offers call, text and calendar alerts on your wrist, the ability to control music playing on the smartphone as well as customizable watch faces. However, there is no way to reply to notifications through the watch currently and it doesn’t support notifications from applications like WhatsApp, Facebook or Hangouts.

The FitBit Blaze comes with a 1.66-inch LCD display with a resolution of 240x180 pixels. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has a 3 axis accelerometer, gyroscope, an altimeter, built in GPS and a heart rate sensor to power its activity tracking features.

The company claims the smartwatch has a 5-day battery life and can be fully charged in about 2 hours. It supports Android, iPhone as well as Windows Phone, making it one of the rare smartwatch options for Windows Phone loyalists. The FitBit Blaze is an excellent choice for people who want a fully featured fitness tracker with some smartwatch features available as a bonus.

5. Fitbit Flex 2

The Fitbit Flex 2 revels in its simplicity. It is a fitness tracker and nothing more, and that is a positive for people who are not interested in smartwatch functionality and want just a simple device that works well.

It measures distance, calories burned and active minutes, has interchangeable bands, sleep tracking as well as silent alarms. Unlike the others in the list, it doesn’t have a display and uses five LED lights to ‘talk’ to the user.

It also comes in a variety of colors and styles and is a good buy for those who are fashion conscious.
