Salute To Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs

The XXIII Annual Function of Army Public School, Chandimandir, was celebrated with glitz and glory portraying the theme ‘Jallianwala Bagh- Hundreds were martyred and millions were inspired’. The chief guest on the first day of the grand occasion was Dharini Arun, joint secretary and head (COE CBSE), Regional Office, Panchkula.
She congratulated the children for putting up an excellent show and applauded the efforts of the staff, teachers and students who worked backstage and handled the smallest details. She said that the motto of the event was well depicted and added, “We must not forget the sacrifices of our freedom fighters.” She also said that there is something special in every child and parents must identify the strengths and weaknesses of the children to inculcate discipline and boost their confidence.
The chief guest on the second day was Maj Gen Anil Duvedi, MG Arty HQ Western Command and the chairman of the school. The guest of honour, Minakshi Duvedi, chairperson, Academic Progress Committee of school added grace to the occasion. He appreciated the performance of the students and congratulated the teachers and the staff for meticulously handling the smallest details and intricately weaving the theme by portraying different events. He said that peace and unity are the need of the hour and urged everyone to practice these ideals.
They were welcomed with master strokes played by the school orchestra band showing an amalgamation of musical and nostalgic melody of ‘Albela sajan aayo re’. The elegant cultural extravaganza commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the chief guest. The alfresco of the school turned aesthetic with the pious Gayatri mantra chanting. It was followed by a welcome speech by principal Suman Singh. Annual report of the school was presented by the students of classes XI and XII in which they highlighted the achievements of the school.
The annual function depicted the unparalleled sacrifice of innocent people at Jallianwala Bagh and the role of Udham Singh as a hero of India’s freedom movement.  To invoke God’s blessings, the students presented the melodious ‘Vaishnav jan bhajan’ followed by the skit ‘Jallianwala Bagh- Punjab da Dil’. It presented the horrifying details of the incident and the memorial built in its remembrance. Next on the list was the energetic gidda and bhangra performance which was applauded by all. It was followed by the skit ‘Udham Singh’s amazing story’, which portrayed the courageous life led by the freedom fighter in detail. A western dance was presented by the tiny tots whose dexterous and synchronised movements enthralled the audience.
The skit ‘Dyer or Dwyer- Responsible for 1919 Massacre’ threw light on the atrocities suffered by the people of Punjab at the hands of then Lt Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer. Next was the spiritual and melodious performance on shabad which involved the audience completely. The skit ‘We haven’t forgotten your sacrifices. We never will’ depicted the trial of Udham Singh in the British court and how he avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Michael O’Dwyer. The emotional performance on ‘Kesari song’ filled the whole atmosphere with a patriotic fervour. Next was the skit ‘Need for a strong national character’ that showcased the need to build a strong national character in the present scenario.
The grand finale at the end was the vibrant and graceful performance on ‘Manjar naya and Vande Mataram’ presented a potpourri of tradition and culture and made everyone salute the spirit of Indian soldiers. Students with academic excellence and those who had won laurels at various state and national level sports events during the present academic session were also awarded during the function.
