The JEE Cracker

Dipanshu Jindal a student of SD Public School, Pitampura has stood first in the JEE exams and is headed to one of the Indian Institutes of Technology. What was his success mantra?

Q What was your preparation strategy for JEE?
Always have a flexible routine when you pick up books for JEE study. I did not follow any rigid conventional timetable to start with. I did whatever pleased me at that moment. There were times, when the work pressure was more, I used to study more to ease that extra study burden off.

Q Have you always been a topper and a hard working student?
Yes sort of. I have always been in the first two positions during my school life.

Q Was there any point that you faced failure?
Yes failures do happen and you have to cope with them. Even in the last two years when I was preparing for JEE, I have been on the back foot many times. I was ranked fifth and sixth. It’s in my attitude that I don’t get too much excited about success or depressed when I don’t do well. Students wshould understand that positivity can get you places.

Q While preparing for JEE what was the most difficult phase that you had to go through?
There were times when I had felt that I cannot do this or crack the exam because it’s so difficult. I sometimes felt that I’m useless and people around me are scoring more than me. You simply have to accept your weakness and work on it.

Q When did you start preparing?
Since I entered class XI, I joined coaching for JEE.

Q Do you think dropping a year for JEE preparation helps?
It might be helpful if there are genuine reasons why one did not qualify in the first attempt. If you have this excuse that you did not study in the two years and now you’ll be hooked to books is wrong. Deep down people know if they can crack JEE or they can’t.

Q What role do coaching classes play in preparing students for JEE?
Do you feel these classes are necessary? They are not actually necessary but if one joins an institute then it’s an added advantage. The classes do provide you with a particular framework and guide. In fact, they do bring in punctuality and discipline. Not to miss out are the test systems, which helps us to assess where we are lacking.

The JEE Mantra
  • Never go for hard work; go for smart work
  • Time management plays a key role in JEE exams
  • Never follow any advice blindly. Ponder over it and decide for yourself whether it’s applicable or not
  • Weigh your strengths and weaknesses
  • Give yourself an advice, you know where you are weak.
