Teen Invents Tablet

Shriank was one of the global finalists for the sixth annual 'Google Science Fair'  to compete for the $50,000 scholarship. He speaks on his feat

Q Can you tell us about your project?
My project’s name is ‘KeepTab’. It is a novel way to aid memory using computer vision algorithms. It aims to assist people in remembering where they’ve placed their day-to-day objects.

Q What is KeepTab?
KeepTab is a solution that comprises of three main parts - camera to detect objects, a micro controller to process /communicate with a backend cloud and the cloud where the heavy-lifting happens to process these images using a deep learning framework. The camera has been demonstrated as a wearable-device in this case, which has been placed over the clothing. Capturing the live images as a user moves around, and process them over a deep learning framework on the backend to extract the objects within them.

Q How did you come up with this idea?
I got the idea after noticing my grandfather struggling to remember the location of a few common items in the house, such as his medicines and glasses. This triggered my curiosity and led me to come up with a solution for this intellectual challenge.

Q What have you learnt from this project?
I have learned a lot from this project, mainly in the field of deep learning and computer vision. I have also learned about the importance of user feedback, which helped me simplify the solution and meet user needs better.

Q What are you planning to do next?
I'm currently trying to implement the solution with a smaller hardware footprint with more advanced optics. I would like to roll it out as a product into the market.

Who's Shrinak?

Shriank, 15, studying in high school at National Public School, Indiranagar in Bangalore, has developed KeepTab which is a wearable-device that uses a cloud-based deep-learning framework to aid human-memory recall the location of their day-to-day objects.
