16 YO Invents Device For Farmers

In a country like India where most of the rural population depends on agriculture as a source of livelihood, travelling long distances just to turn on the water pump to irrigate fields is unavoidable. Erratic, and in most cases, complete absence of electricity puts paid to the farmer’s plans to ensure that water is in abudant supply. Ishan Malhotra, a 16-year-old boy from New Delhi, has a solution to this problem. He has created Pluto, an electric device, which may mitigate the farmer’s woes.

Q Can you tell us about your project Pluto?
‘Pluto’ has been specifically created for farmers. Through this device, farmers can control the operation of their water pump while sitting in any corner of the village, city, country.

Q How did the idea originate?
I study in Jayshree Periwal  International school which follows an IB curriculum (International Baccalaureate (IB), formerly known as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), is an international educational foundation headquartered in Geneva). We are taught to do our bit to empower our fellow beings. During various field trips organised by the school I would often notice how hard the farmers had to work to give us the grains we eat each day and what a difficult life they lead. Their problems were manifold: old conventional methods, physical labour, sporadic electricity, blazing summer... With limited resources their dependence on electricity was far more than one can imagine. My professor often spoke of the need to bring in a social change through the power of technology. That’s when I thought of  doing my bit to impact the lives of farmers in whatever way I could.

Q Tell us about the difficulties you encountered?
To be honest, I  have actually lost count of the number of difficulties I faced.

Q Who else can benefit from this invention?
Pluto can be used to operate any electrical device – by using  25 AMP power. Working women can operate their washing machines while sitting in their office. Grandparents can switch on the lights even before entering the house.

Q What is your next invention?
Invention is a big word. Let’s just say I have enjoyed building electronic gadgets and toys even when I  was a  child. From dismantling my old computer to building a new one, to making numerous volcano experiments to endless remote-controlled vehicles and drones, coming out with something new has always been my cup of tea.

This device I feel will help farmers to make a judicious use of water in their farms. I had also made a model "Automatic Hydraulic Sensor". It was also based on the same principle.
