Happy Birthday Emily Arnold McCully!

If it weren't for you, we wouldn't know that one could walk on a tight rope if one really really wanted to...

July 1 is the birthday of Emily Arnold McCully.

The beloved writer and illustrator of over 20 children's books is best known for the classic 'Mirette on the High Wire', the story of a French girl who learns to walk on the tight rope. Mirette's adventurous story was adapted for a musical by none other than celebrated composers like Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. But if the author still doesn't ring a bell, here's another way to know more

Times NIE students who are big fans share some of their favourite books by the McCully that they enjoyed as kids.

Marvelous Mattie

Marvelous Mattie is my all-time favourite as it is the one book that motivates youngsters to explore their own creativity. The main character Mattie is an inventor who can create anything with her father's toolbox like toys and sleds. Her brother calls her ideas 'brainstorms' and during the course of the book Mattie earns the title of 'Lady Edison'. It's a childhood must!

The Bed Book

The Bed Book was written by Emily McCully and Sylivia Plath. It is a highly imaginative book that describes all the different kind of beds that can be made for not just sleeping! Can you imagine a jet-propelled bed, a snack bed or a pocket-sized bed? I certainly couldn't have if i had not known the author.

Mirette on the High Wire

Mirette on the High Wire is a children's book by Emily Mccully. The book is about a young girl who learns to walk on a tight rope. The idea itself ofcourse was considered very stupid because ofcourse why would a girl want to walk a tight rope? Despite all odds she learns how to achieve her dreams. It has always given me great motivation.

'Clara: The (Mostly) True Story of the Rhinoceros who Dazzled Kings, Inspired Artists, and Won the Hearts of Everyone...While She Ate Her Way Up and Down a Continent.

As a kid I loved to read 'Clara: The (Mostly) True Story of the Rhinoceros who Dazzled Kings, Inspired Artists, and Won the Hearts of Everyone...While She Ate Her Way Up and Down a Continent.' It was based on the true story of an 18th century rhino who toured Europe and became a big sensation. Whether you are a history buff, or an animal lover, this book will get to you! Today it is a precious part of my library.

Beautiful Warrior: The Legend of the Nun's Kung Fu

Beautiful Warrior: The Legend of the Nun's Kung Fu is a lovely book that I would recommend to all my friends. Emily Mcully has a wonderful faculty for description. The lively and picturesque locations refabricate a period of Chinese history as the story unfolds. The author wonderfully encourages one to find strength in oneself and reiterates how mastering oneself can help one find equilibrium and harmony in the universe It surges with energy and motivates the same in the reader.
