A Thrilling Narrative

Movie: Neerja

Starcast: Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and others

Directed by: Ram Madhvani

Synopsis: Neerja Bhanot's mother (Shabana Azmi) expresses concern about Neerja's job as a flight attendant and suggests Neerja to return to her old job of modeling. Neerja likes her job and is driven to the airport by her boyfriend Jaideep (Shekhar Ravjiani). As Neerja boards Pan Am 73 it is revealed that a terrorist group has planned to hijack the plane in Karachi. The plane takes off from Mumbai's Sahar International Airport and lands in Karachi where the four terrorists belonging to Abu Nidal's organization board the plane disguised as security officers escorting a Libyan diplomat. They reveal themselves and hijack the plane.

Verdict (on a scale of 1-10): 10/10

The movie is a thrilling narrative of valour, a story infused with patriotism, sacrifice and bravery. This film is a biopic of one of the most respected, youngest and only female recipient of the Ashok Chakra Award For Bravery; air hostess: Neerja Bhanot.

Portrayed by Sonam Kapoor, Neerja is depicted as the very ideal of courage, sacrifice and patriotism. Following the story of the 1986 hijack of the Pan Am flight to New York, this film is bound to leave its audiences in tears. From her timely alert to the pilots regarding the hijack, to her presence of mind in hiding the passports of all American passengers and planning the final escape, Neerja sticks furiously to her duty as the caretaker of the passengers, without caring for her own life. Her final sacrifice, however has the most impact, instilling a sense of patriotism and respect in the audiences.

The entire portrayal of the event sends a shiver down one’s spine. Every person leaves the cinema hall with a sense of admiration for what Neerja did for this country and pride that true heroes still exist.
