For someone who considers having wasted half a day, in-case you are found ensconced in the safe havens of a warm quilt beyond 7:00 am, the concept of “sleeping in” has been a huge learning. I must confess it was a slow process but considering that nippy mornings of November can enthuse huge energies to remain lethargic especially if the tutors are the self- assured children of today – it surely fast tracks the said learning!

Living by the age old adage that “Change is the only constant” I do one day try and attempt to “sleep in” under the tutelage of the young members of the family. For the phenomenon to be utterly successful you have to prepare with all the tools and accessories that would facilitate it …. Phone (in silent mode/alarms and reminders set off), ear plugs, spruced up play list, curtains done, next day instructions and plans all made.

One such Saturday evening I try and keep myself awake till late in the night (one of the key factors that facilitates “sleeping in”) and find it hard to go beyond 11:30 pm. My tutors say I have set myself up for a disaster as the minimum acceptable criteria is atleast being awake till an hour past midnight. Never mind I console myself it’s a good start …. I am a good 2 hours beyond my sleep time and that can safely take me beyond my late waking up hour of 7:00 am.

Come Sunday morning I find myself tossing and turning way earlier than my usual wake up time of 5:30 am!!. Knowledge and research suggest a pre occupied mind is never completely at rest. A failed attempt at “sleeping in” and upping my acceptance quotient is nicely regaled at the next family get together and the only thing that comes to my rescue is my sharing and justifying the phenomena to all their parents based on a new found study that actually suggests that teenagers need more hours to sleep (to facilitate their brain development)!

Not only that I cover solid ground when I further share that there is serious consideration and discussion underway in the higher echelons of research and education think tank to actually postpone school hours to accommodate the increased sleep hours for kids!!!

With that I heave a sigh of relief and vow that I will never ever announce any future attempts to “sleep in” that I shall make…. till such time as I succeed. Well I am still waiting for one successful attempt.
