How Do I Deal With The Nerd Tag?

Because I read a lot, I am commonly labelled a nerd. My friends don't want to make any plans with me thinking I will back out. I don't feature in any 'happening' list. Should I be bothered by it?

Being a nerd is more of a compliment. Those who cannot read even a single book back to back will label you a nerd, just ignore them. You read, because you like reading, that what is important. Reading is an informative and entertaining pastime, in fact it is more than a hobby – a good book can actually change your life. Those who are calling you a nerd, because of your extra reading, are actually belittling themselves.

Just because you don't feature in any list, doesn't make you less popular. People are calling you names and poke fun of you because they feel you have an edge. Be proud of yourself. Reading books is a good thing. Try to influence others to read too.

Dr Neeti Mohan, counsellor

Reading books is an excellent hobby and you should never let go of it. On the other hand, it is also important for you to participate in extra curricular activities like field trips and outings. It is important that you are well turned up which means you are good at everything. Having said that, don't worry about what others say. Just do what your heart asks you to do.

Even I have been tagged as a nerd, but I just continued to be myself. Slowly they started looking into the other aspects of me, and the tag disappeared on its own.
