How I Keep Fit After School: Teachers Tell Us

Exams, discipline, lessons, PTAs... being a teacher is no cakewalk. We ask teachers for tips on unwinding...

I walk it out

Teachers today are under pressure not due to the teaching-learning process, but because it has become a very demanding profession. Though the satisfaction is immense, there is also much pressure. Students today are exposed to loads of information and generally know a lot, so one needs to be updated all the time. They need to keep themselves abreast with the latest in technology to feel comfortable among students. Hence, it is very important for teachers to keep themselves physically fit. I usually practice yoga or meditation for relaxation on a daily basis. It is very important that teachers should try and lead an active lifestyle after long hours in school. Even a good walk in the evening can be quite relaxing to begin with.

Teaching is a unique profession and I believe one can teach well only if one is at peace with oneself. After a challenging day at work, I relax by going for a walk in the park. Also, avoiding excessive caffeine has helped me a lot.

I play with my child

I play with my child to de-stress after coming back from school where I have to manage more than 100 students every day. Sometimes I get tired after taking classes consecutively and ensuring that discipline is maintained. To feel refreshed after a hard day at work, I listen to music, watch television and read books.

Quality time with my family

The first thing I do when I reach home is turn off my cellphone and laptop. The world of technology can have my attention on the following working day (for personal calls, I have another number)! I can then spend quality time with my family which calms me down instantly.

Experts suggest doing teachers do these things to unwind after school.

Teachers can sometimes go for a movie together after schools. During their off-periods, they can chat with fellow teachers, read books and listen to their favourite songs to help them unwind.
Udita Boral, psychologist, Kolkata

Teachers should turn to do yoga and meditation for immediate de-stressing. It is important that they are rejuvenated every day before going to school. They must feel totally fit and healthy, both physically and mentally in order to excel in their profession as they are dealing with young minds.
Tanuja Donde, psychologist, Mumbai

In order to relax, one must first figure out the root cause and work towards eliminating it. One easy and simple way to de-stress is to practice deep breathing daily. Even if one can’t do it at home, try some deep breathing at school during free periods. It is important to practise simple exercises regularly to stay relaxed.
