A Sneak Peek Into History
Students take a tour of the musical instruments

Visit to Raja Dinkar Kelkar museum

City International School, Satara Road recently organised an educational trip for its students to Raja Dinkar Kelkar museum which was established in1920 and is located in Shukrawar Peth, Pune.
The life-like statues and artefacts here caught the attention of the students, who were soon intrigued about the history of the place. This was followed by the visit to another section where silver ornaments and scent bottles made of glass and manufactured in Maharashtra were housed. Also, there were different  types of shrines and God sculptures made up of stone, marble and wood. It was amazing to know the craft of people in those days who made such beautiful artefacts with bare minimum tools available then. They also had  noodle makers, vegetable cutters and nut cutters. The nut cutters had different designs like a mother holding her child. Then, there was the tribal art made from terracotta. Next, in the line, were the weapons, the swords, daggers and shields. There were armours made of  fish scales and crocodile skin. The clothing of ancient people were equally impressive. The quilt of Anandibai Gopal Joshi grabbed the visitors’ attention. Embroidery painting of Ramabai Kelkar, the leather puppets and a horse sculpture made up of cloth were among the many antiques.
In the music section, students saw the peacock sitar, the magar yaaz, double tambora etc. The glass paintings were exceptionally done, along with Buddha’s cloth painting. As the tour was at its last venue, students also saw the musical instruments like kawan madhyalam, aadi tambora and flutes of Pannalal Ghosh. At the very end students saw playing cards, chess and the game of dice from the old times.
At the deaprture, students felt like leaving the era of 18-19 A.D. Students  enjoyed a lot and it was certainly one of the best museum visits they ever had.
