Juhi Chawla On Journey Of Self

JUHI CHAWLA shares the many positive changes in her life that her practice of yoga brought about for her

Ihave been practising yoga since the last 10 years. It started off once a fortnight, then once a week, and gradually became a very important part of my life. I now practise it at least three to four times a week and in case I miss out on it someday, I cover it up at the earliest chance I get, either by myself or by asking my teacher to set up a quick session with me. Yoga has got me focused as well as calmed me down as a person. Overall, it helps me just feel better! After each session of yoga, I feel refreshed, calm and rejuvenated. It has given me inner strength — self-assurance from the inside. It has also made me much more flexible! I now adapt more easily to any situation and find myself being able to work much better around them;hence yoga has benefited me in a lot of positive ways! There are lots of people who start yoga just to lose weight, and that is actually fine!

I too started yoga for much the same reason, for I didn’t want to go to the gym! Whatever may be the reason for you to start yoga, if you stay with it, it will take you inward a long way and will align you with yourself.

Mind, body and soul connection through yoga align you with nature! Yoga apparently comes from the word yukta, which is a union with yourself as well as with the universe! My favourite yoga poses are Sarvangasana and Halasana, which I get to do at the end of my yoga sessions. So after a lot of dynamic stretching, I eventually come to this which is a kind of upsidedown position, and this is where the blood rushes to your head, face and upper body which really relaxes and makes you feel just so nice! Sometimes when I am in the Halasana pose, I think to myself:‘ Can’t I just be like this for a while and not curl out of this!’ Overall, it is so very relaxing! Physically, yoga helped me tremendously after my second pregnancy to stay healthy and also to open up from within. Yoga cannot be compartmentalised, no matter how and when you begin. If you are in it, it is like a journey within and every time it takes you one step closer to yourself. The closer you are to yourself, the more at peace you will be with yourself.

Once that happens, you are automatically in peace with nearly everything around you. The goal of yoga is to create a space where you were once stuck and to unveil the layers of protection that you have built around your heart; to appreciate your body and become aware of the mind and noise it creates; to make peace with who you are; to love well...you! Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the Self. I am so happy I chose yoga — it is the best thing that ever happened to me!
