Bringing Hope To The World

A belief central to many of the great eastern religious traditions is the doctrine of samsara, the karmic cycle of death and rebirth. There are two questions that lie behind this doctrine of reincarnation: (1) What is the kind of life that awaits a person beyond death? (2) How can a person ultimately transcend death?

These questions are, of course, not asked by religious people only. Every worldview, religious or secular, and indeed every individual, asks these two fundamental questions of life. And gives different answers too.

On the first question, for some, there is simply no life after death; this is all there is to life. For others, the next life is utterly unpredictable; it can be anything anywhere, depending on one’s karma.

On the second question of transcending death ,the answers also vary. For some, death is inescapable, inevitable, and final. How can death be transcended? Answer: It cannot be transcended. For others, it can be transcended by going through multitudinous renditions of reincarnation, and finally ‘escaping’ the whole cycle of death and rebirth.

The events of Good Friday and also give an answer.

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ tell us that death, in all its horror and pain, is inevitable, inescapable, and painful. But it is not final. They show us that truly transcending death is possible only through defeating it, not escaping it. But defeating death is possible only through meeting it. After all, one cannot defeat an opponent one has never met. And meeting death is but to die.

Defeating death, however, does not just mean meeting it; it means meeting it, and rising again, never to die again. The resurrection of Jesus also gives us a glimpse of the kind of life that a person can partake of in the next life: Eternal life .Life that does not need to be reborn again — because it is life that does not die again.
