Singer Marie Fredriksson Passed Away

ROXETTE singer Marie Fredriksson has lost her 17-year cancer battle at the age of 61. The Swedish star shot to international success in the late 80s alongside bandmate Per Gessle with hits including The Look and Listen To Your Heart.

After their management confirmed Marie's death, devastated Per, 60, said in a statement: "Marie, thanks for everything. You were an outstanding musician an amazing performer.

"You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years. I'm proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour.

"All my love goes out to you and your family. Things LOVE With husband will never be the same. Thanks for painting my black and white songs in the most beautiful colours."

The duo became one of the biggest acts in the world in the 80s and 90s after their track It Must Have Been Love featured in the blockbuster movie Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The now-iconic ballad became their biggest UK hit, reaching No 3. Following aggressive treatment after her 2002 brain tumour diagnosis, Marie took a step back from music before returning to performing in 2009.

Roxette released new music and toured until 2016, when doctors told Marie to focus on her health. She lost her long battle with the illness recently.

Dimberg Jernberg management said: "During the comeback years, Marie was an amazing trouper, overcoming the many rigours of touring in order to meet her fans on stage again and again."

Marie's spokesperson added in a statement that she was "a wonderful person, with a huge appetite for life, and a woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met".

Roxette released 10 studio albums, four of which made the UK Top 10, and sold more than 80million records. They were nominated for Best International Group at the 1990 BRIT Awards following the global success of their second album Look Sharp!

In 1991 they won an MTV Video Award for Joyride. The band also scored three numbers ones in the US. Marie released her first solo album Het Vind in 1984 before teaming up with Per, who was part of another band called Gyllene Tider.

A record executive suggested they form a duo releasing English language music, leading them to international success. She is survived by husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children Josefin and Oscar.
