Restraint Worked In Our Favour: Navy Chief

NEW DELHI: Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said India's restraint in face of China's belligerent rhetoric worked in the country's favour during the Doklam troop faceoff, even as the defence establishment did not rule out "pinpricks" from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) along the Line of Actual Control. "They (Chinese) used a media campaign, where they were very shrill in their comments. We used it in a different way, we kept quiet. And, that has worked for us," said Admiral Lanba, speaking on the sidelines of a seminar here.

Though the Navy chief declined to say anything on the standoff, defence establishment sources said India will need to keep its guard up all along the 4,057-km LAC from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh despite Indian and PLA troops finally disengaging from the over 70-day confrontation on the Bhutanese territory of Doklam. "Doklam was unique in the sense that Indian troops blocked PLA soldiers from changing the status quo for the first time in a third country (Bhutan). But PLA is likely to continue, if not step up, its similar tactics along the LAC with India, like it has been doing for years to lay claim to disputed areas," said a source.
