India and Sri Lanka on Wednesday sought to provide a fillip to bilateral economic cooperation by signing an MoU for cooperation in economic projects in the foreseeable future.

After a meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe, the two countries expressed commitment towards ensuring that this mutually beneficial MoU agenda was expeditiously implemented. They also expressed hope for an early conclusion of the ongoing negotiations on the economic and technical cooperation agreement (ETCA), the government said in a press release.

The MoU is important in the context of growing Chinese economic footprints in Sri Lanka. The two countries are also finalising an MoU for joint development of Trincomalee port in northeastern Sri Lanka. “Held comprehensive talks with PM Ranil Wickremesinghe on ways to strengthen IndiaSri Lanka ties for the benefit of our citizens,“ Modi tweeted after the meeting held at Hyderabad House.

“The discussions of the Indian leadership with the visiting dignitary provided both sides an opportunity to review the progress in implementation of the decisions taken during various highlevel exchanges in the past two years or so, including the visit of the PM to Sri Lanka in March 2015 and the visits of the President and the PM of Sri Lanka to India since February 2015,“ the MEA said in a statement.

“The two sides expressed their satisfaction at the progress...,“ it said. The ministry said the Indian side reiterated India''s commitment to promoting prosperity in the neighbourhood and affirmed the continued support of India for realising the vision of the Sri Lankan leadership for a stable, peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.

India has agreed to take up building of three roads in Jaffna and Dambulla region in Sri Lanka on PPP model. Bilateral cooperation in road construction came up for discussion during the meeting of Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe and highways minister Nitin Gadkari.
