7 Movies That Remind Us Of The Monsoons

Bollywood movies are incomplete without a sequence of rain followed by lightening and thunder. Here is a list that will make you want to watch these movies again and again.

Monsoon Wedding – Punjabi weddings are known for their energy, the cuisine and the overworked DJ. Combine that with rain and you have an explosion of experiences which this movie artistically captures.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - This 1998 classic drew its look from Riverdale High School from Archie comics and the Hollywood series 90210. Who would’ve guessed? But what was the biggest takeaway from this film? When Kajol meets SRK in the fields to confess her feelings. With the rain in the background, the scene becomes a memorable one.

Guru – We all know the story of an energetic man from the village that overcomes the challenges of the streets of Mumbai with his wife and rises to own one of India’s biggest conglomerates. Guru was shot entirely in the monsoons; so there is a lot of rain and thunder that will keep you company troughout the film!

Lagaan – Cricket and the eagerly awaited monsoon rain. Should I say anymore? The last or call it the first drop of rain that falls on the earth makes up for every thing in the film. As audiences, weren't we all ecstatic when the rain gods finally came pouring down?

Wakeup Sid – A story of subtle romance between an aspiring writer and college student that’s best watched when raining.

1942-A Love Story – The 22 year old Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor starrer has some of the best songs produced by legends RD Burman and Javed Akhtar that we all hum to even now irrespective of age. Remmeber that rain soaked hill station with breathtaking view? If not, watch this again!

Taal – This blockbuster features Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Khanna and was the first India film to reach the top 20 of Variety’s Box list. It also stars little Shahid Kapoor who’s now really really big. We also can’t stop thanking AR Rahman for the famous songs shot in intermittent rain - like Taal Se Taal and Ishq Bina.

Student Speak

I feel the one movie you must watch in the monsoons is 'Raincoat' by the late Rituparno Ghosh . Starring Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai, this is an adaptation of the short story "The Gift of the Magi" (1906) by O Henry. Watch it for Aishwarya, as she conveys the plain and depressed Neerja, for someone regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world this is absolute brilliance.  The rain and the Raincoat act as if, they are the characters of the film!
