Love Seeing Memes? This Is Why

There is a reason why memes are getting popular by the day. To know more, read on...

What is the best thing for you to do as you scroll through your newsfeed? Most of you reading this will say ‘memes’. You like them, share them endlessly and laugh along but do you really know why are memes actually so popular? What is it that makes you feel happy as you spend your time seeing memes? Turns out, memes do actually make you happy for one simple reason – they make you feel validated or, in the millennial context, you feel ‘relatable’.

Why memes?

We live in the age of social media. So we tend to use social media to seek validation and sharing memes is a way to ensure that you do not feel lonely and instead, find a way to connect with people online. Psychologists say that when you share it with someone, you get an adrenaline rush and your dopamine levels spike up, keeping you happy and afloat.

When you see a meme and relate with it, you feel a sense of ‘identification’ and when you find a similar group liking the same stuff, you feel that you aren’t alone.

Memes for health?

When you come across a picture or a meme which you find ‘relatable’, it can also have an impact on your thinking ability. Whenever you see something which makes you say ‘funny’ or ‘legit true’, the biochemistry in our brain, which is very fluid always changes. You learn newer things and also communicate with your inner feelings. They also make you feel at peace. They make you realise what you really want and need, without actually saying it.

Helps reduce anxiety?

Experts also say that coming across memes about anxiety and depression can also help bridge the gap between the lack of mental healthcare and those in need. Such memes and fan pages can make for a safe space for people to share their feelings, express any problems they might be suffering from. This is especially useful, considering how the millennial generation, the most active user base on social media face higher levels of anxiety (upto 11 per cent) as compared to the older generation.
